Thanksgiving race

Turkey Day Race Preview: 2024 West Linn Turkey Trot

There is no shortage of Turkey Trots to choose from on Thanksgiving morning, but I personally singed myself up for the 2024 West Linn Turkey Trot. Why pick this one?

Well, for one, the West Linn Turkey Trot is a Run With Paula Event. I’ve never once regretted signing up for one of Paula’s races, as they are always well organized and super fun.

Another great reason to sign up for this race is the course. Most turkey trots are 5k runs around town and while these are fun to participate in, I love that this one is on the trails of Mary S Young Park. It’s for sure hilly and a bit longer than a 5k at 3.8 miles long but I LOVE that it’s primarily on bark and dirt trail roads rather than asphalt. I’m also always out for a challenge, especially if it’s beautiful, and trail runs are my jam. There is some paved path on the course too but be warned that it could be muddy and slippery depending on the weather. I’d recommend trail shoes for this one personally.

This race is also, as it should be, a family-friendly event! There’s a ½ mile kid’s race kicking off Thanksgiving morning at 8:45AM and the 3.8 mile trail race afterwards at 9:00AM. Also, if you want to participate with a stroller, the course has a stroller-modified course to avoid the stairs. Paula’s races always try to include everyone!

There will be hot chocolate and treats available at the end of the race and the first 600 entrants get a Turkey Trot Mug at packet pick up. There’s even a costume contest, so wear your favorite Turkey Day garb and you could win a $50 Portland Running Company gift card. Paul will also be giving away 50 fresh Pumpkin Pies randomly at the finish line! YUM!!!

The cost of this event is $10 for the kid’s race and $25 for the 3.8 mile trail race. The West Linn Food Pantry is the charity of choice for the event this year, so please consider bringing a can of food (not expired, please) to donate and/or make a cash donation to the cause.

Early packet-pick up will be an option on Wednesday November 27th from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Beaverton Portland Running Company. Consider showing up then to avoid the lines race morning, where packet pick up will open at 7:30AM. If you are donating food, please bring it to the race start and not to the store.
