I’ve only gone surfing once in my life. It was on the Oregon coast, where I had to wear a wetsuit and still ended up freezing. Needless to say, I didn’t have the greatest time. I’ve never tried surfing in well-known spots like Hawaii, and I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the closest I’ll get to “hanging ten” is logging another ten miles on my Strava account.

But that doesn’t mean the desire to learn doesn’t still tug at my heartstrings a bit. I may never be even a fraction of the surfer that Kelly Slater is, but thanks to the Tracksmith Run Surf Run apparel collection (which is a new direction of their Run Cannonball Run series), I can at least feel a bit more connected to the surfing culture.

The summer season unleashes freedom in our training, an opportunity to take advantage of warm weather and open waters as the hot and heavy air seeps into each day. This year, we’ve collaborated with our friends at Mami Wata to take our Run Cannonball Run Collection in a new direction, combining our moisture wicking, quick-drying fabrics with striking graphics that celebrate African surf culture.
This collection just screams summer. The items in this collection—tees, tanks, and shorts—beg to be worn in warm weather and near water. While not as “tropical” as other summer items tend to be, there is a definite surf vibe in all of the designs. Each piece physically represents a combination of surfing and running, while still staying true to the classic styling of Tracksmith.
Run Surf Run Singlet
The singlet is very comfortable and has the qualities that adorn their tops—moisture-wicking and lightweight. It features their classic 2:09 mesh and is equally ready to toe the line for a summer race, or wear out and about while charging tickets to your own personal gun-show.
This is a simple item to take on a summer trip, perfect for a beach run, and then to wear immediately for beach relaxation. This tank top is definitely making the cut for our Hawaii trip later this summer.
- 82% Polyester, 18% Spandex Tricot Mesh with Antimicrobial Finish
Run Surf Run Shorts
Regular running shorts aren’t ideal for swimming, as you’ll chafe all the way home. Similarly, swimsuits aren’t designed for running and will leave you chafing the whole time. Sense a theme here? (Ahem…chafing…). These shorts, however, are made for both activities.
Crafted from an Italian-engineered fabric previously used for Olympic speed suits, they are moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and cool to the touch.
As a result, the shorts could absolutely double as a pair to wear on a short beach run, but their true nature is for water. They are a brief-lined, 5-inch option that looks great regardless of where you’re wearing them.
I don’t know if it is by design, but the surfers on the shorts, adorned with numbers on their shirts, have my mind hypothesizing that they are 5K racers with their bibs on.
- Body: 71% Micro Nylon, 29% Elastane
- Lining: 82% Polyester / 18% Spandex Tricot Mesh with Wicking
This collection is fun all the way around and perfect for summer styling, multifunctional running, and activewear. Highly recommended.
