Gearing Up with Salewa

We are now in the middle of what I call “true outdoor season.” While I run in all weather, my hiking and outdoor excursions really pick up in June. I have a robust running wardrobe, but my hiking and outdoor gear could use some improvement. Recently, we tried out a few crossover items from Salewa that bridge the gap between hiking and casual options.

Salewa is a company we’re familiar with, but this is our first in-depth review of their products. They offer a range of trail running and hiking footwear, as well as hiking gear. We received two new items from them: a top and a bottom that work equally well in casual settings and on the trails.

Puez Dry Short Sleeve Shirt (86% Polyamide | 14% Elastane)

When I look in my closet, it’s easy to see I only have a handful of collared shirts. Before the pandemic, my wardrobe was mostly filled with work-casual options. However, as I work mostly from home, I find I don’t need them as much now, so I don’t buy them often. And my closet is thing as a result. The Puez Dry Short Sleeve Shirt is a great option that works nicely on work calls AND is capable of handling the great outdoors as well.

I recommend going a size up (I typically wear a large, but the XL fit perfectly). Sizing up provided the ideal fit for a collared shirt in my opinion—not too tight, not too loose, and plenty of room for range of motion. The shirt’s breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities are key for outdoor activities. The look, construction, and functionality are impressive. There are three colorways, but we received a navy plaid shirt that looks both classic and great. It’s super stretchy, with a woven nylon fabric that enhances breathability.

The shirt features a full button closure and a single zipped pocket on the right chest. All in all, this is one of the few collared shirts I would go out of my way to purchase – and this is now one of them. Now, my closet and hiking gear have a bit more versatility.

Pedroc Pro Durastretch Cargo Shorts (88% recycled Polyamide | 12% Elastane)

The shorts are also a solid crossover item that looks good in both casual and active scenarios. Don’t let the term “cargo shorts” deter you. While they do have larger zipped pockets on both legs, and stretchier mesh pockets on the back hips, they are not the terribly styled khaki cargo shorts from the 1990s and 2000s. This is a fresh and updated version. They are as sleek and streamlined a pair of “cargo shorts” may have ever been.

They are very lightweight and feature panels on the legs, crotch, and back that enhance breathability. They look like a casual pair of shorts that you can wear to a ballgame, as well as able to take on the rigors of some trail walking.
