Run Oregon Road Trip to the Hotel Rose

Run Oregon loves running – that’s no surprise. But we also love the Pacific Northwest and all that it has to offer. Running is a part of us, but it does not fully define us. In our “Make a Day of It” feature, we aim to showcase some great local non-running events and highlight where to run and how to make the most of your experience!

The most recent location for our runcation series is a new stay at Hotel Rose.

First the Running:

You can stumble out of any hotel room in Portland and immediately be met with any number of great routes to check out within minutes. Isn’t Oregon the best? However, with Hotel Rose sitting right along the Naito Parkway, you are about as close as you can be to some solid miles.

Waterfront/Esplanade Loop

  • The Waterfront Loop is the ideal starting point for any running enthusiast. This popular route circles around the city, providing runners with some of the most scenic downtown views. Whether you’re looking to extend or limit your mileage, you can easily cross over any number of bridges, tailoring your distance to your preferences. If you are new to visiting, or haven’t been to PDX in a while, it really offers an invigorating experience that will fuel your passion for outdoor fitness and help you fully immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings.

Willamette River Greenway Trail

  • Although the Willamette River Greenway Trail can be considered an extension of the Waterfront Loop, it truly deserves recognition as a distinct and noteworthy route. Whenever I find myself in town, this trail is my go-to for a refreshing run. And since the Hotel Rose sits on the northern edge of Naito, it’s even quicker to access. From the hotel, this is a 4.5 mile out and back that hugs the river closely, with only a few minor detours. One of its most appealing features is its tranquility, offering a quieter and more serene experience compared to the bustling Waterfront Loop.
The Spot:

I have driven and run past the Hotel Rose for years and am excited to finally have the opportunity to stay there. As far as “runcations” go, I can’t imagine a better spot. I won’t belabor the location (see the above section for reasons why it’s great), but it’s perfect for running or racing. Keep it in mind for events like the Shamrock Run PDX and the Portland Marathon!

Hotel Rose, a StayPineapple hotel, is incredibly welcoming and focused on creating value through their exceptional hospitality. The rooms are comfortable (more on that later), but it’s the little touches that make this place stand out. In the late afternoons they offer coffee and pineapple-themed treats, and they have a strong focus on health and wellness. This focus extends beyond fitness to the overall stay experience.

The towels and duvets are not just functional; they are plush and designed to help you rejuvenate. Bottled water is provided free in the rooms (and there’s a refill station in the lobby) to keep you hydrated, and bikes (or an Zipcar) are available to check out and explore the city right from the lobby.

The main space is very accommodating and welcoming (and there’s a complimentary check-in drink ready for you), but if you prefer to skip the interaction and head straight to your room, there is quick and easy mobile check-in available. Dogs are also welcome if travelling with your 4-legged bestie.

Our Room:

There are a variety of room sizes available, ranging from double beds to suites. We stayed in a Cityscape King room, which offers a lovely view of the Rose City (depending on which way you are facing, I suppose). The interior color scheme is fun and fresh, featuring a tropical mix of blues, yellows, and magentas.

The room includes many of the amenities you would expect from a quality hotel. Additionally, the room comes with super plush robes, which I highly recommend for relaxing after a long run. The highlight, however, is the unexpectedly luxurious rain showerhead, which makes post-run recovery as pleasant as possible in a hotel setting. Combine all those together and you get one heck of a fun stay.

Refueling:

Portland is a burgeoning destination for foodies, so my first recommendation would be to get out and explore the numerous excellent restaurants and breweries that adorn the city.

However, you also can’t go wrong with the on-site restaurant, Bottle + Kitchen. This spot offers elevated American cuisine that is locally sourced, along with a solid drink menu. Enjoy daily happy hours (dubbed “Pineapple Hours”) from 4-6pm in a casual and welcoming space.

If you are looking for a little more rejuvenation, may we recommend the quick and easy walk, bike, or drive over to Knot Springs?!

Overall:

As Salemites, we are very familiar with Portland. For this stay, we were in and out for just one night to experience this location, and we’re glad we did. While this is an ideal runcation spot for those traveling from afar, it’s equally perfect for local runners looking for a staycation. The location is fantastic, and we will definitely be back!
