We recently discovered 66°North, an Icelandic company known for its expertise in cold-weather running gear. As we’re currently in spring, we’ve been exploring some of their milder weather options that we’ve been wearing over the past few weeks. They reported a bustling presence at their store during the London Marathon, piquing our curiosity about their offerings.
Kársnes
The Kársnes shorts embody simplicity and functionality with their understated design. Available in solid colors like black (reviewed), aqua, and purply-maroon, they boast a minimalist aesthetic adorned with simply a discreet logo on the right leg. Featuring a brief liner and two front pockets, they offer practicality without unnecessary embellishments. It’s just a pair of shorts at its core – and that’s a good thing to be.
It does have some standout features. The elasticated waistband, which includes a drawstring for a customizable fit, enhances comfort during wear. Additionally, their breathability and lightweight construction make them really accessible for warm weather runner. Notably, the longer inseam caters to those (like myself) who prefer a little extra thigh coverage. I like these.
- Outer Layer – Main fabric (93% PA, 7% Lycra)
Box Logo Tee
Perhaps it’s the Icelandic influence, but this tee follows the same ethos as the shorts. It’s simple, straightforward, and devoid of flashy elements. Instead, it’s a well-constructed, comfortable, minimalist shirt featuring a small logo on the chest. Made from a poly/cotton blend, it leans towards the heavier side compared to typical running tech shirts. However, this weightiness contributes to its durability and versatility, making it an excellent choice for everyday wear or as a post-run layer.
- 86% Polyester, 14% Cotton
This comes in black and navy.
Staðarfell
I was initially hesitant about the jacket from 66°North, primarily due to its color scheme not aligning with my usual preferences. The brighter blue hue, while nice, wasn’t typically my go-to for jackets. However, I’ve learned not to judge apparel solely by its color, and this jacket truly proved that point. The moment I put it on, I found myself wearing it continuously for the next five hours – no exaggeration. It’s rare to find a jacket with such features that offers such exceptional comfort, but this one certainly delivers.
What struck me most is its balance of qualities: lightweight yet substantial, stretchy yet structured. It manages to withstand the elements while remaining surprisingly comfortable for everyday wear. The fit is also worth noting; I recommend sizing up, as I typically wear a large but found the XL to be a perfect fit. The sleeve length was just right, and it provided ample room for layering underneath.
While it features two waterproof zippered chest pockets, I do wish it included lower torso pockets – a personal preference. However, it does have additional pockets on the left sleeve and in the middle lower back, offering some extra storage space.
Functionally, this jacket is ideal for the Pacific Northwest climate. During the unpredictable wetness of this spring, its waterproof qualities proved reliable. Although it lacks a hood, necessitating additional headwear for complete dryness, the high neck zipper ensures warmth and protection elsewhere. Overall, it’s a versatile and dependable choice for navigating varying weather conditions.
- Outer Layer – Main fabric (85% Polyester, 15% Spandex | Polartec Neoshell)
Outer Layer – Second fabric Polartec Windpro light
This comes in 2 colors – the other a bright red option.
We’ve been thoroughly impressed with the offerings from 66°North. Despite their premium pricing, their products exude quality and durability, making them well worth the investment. We recommend going a size up in everything, but we’re definitely on board with what they have to offer.
