Gear Up for Adventure: Roark’s Layover Insulated Pants and Hebrides Jacket

The complexity of Pacific Northwest weather is a well-established fact. Days may begin with promising sunshine, only to be engulfed by a blanket of clouds, leaving us drenched for the remainder. Conversely, forecasts predicting rain may surprise us with intermittent bursts of sunshine, creating unexpectedly pleasant conditions. This variability is a familiar aspect of our region, and by and large, we have adapted accordingly, especially in our approach to the outdoors.

Recently, we’ve explored some casual cold weather clothing options from Roark – the Layover Insulated Pants and Hebrides Jacket.

A well-fitting pair of pants is a wardrobe essential for nearly everyone. However, when those pants boast qualities like water repellency and insulated lining, it’s as if they were tailor-made for the unpredictable weather of Oregon. The Layover Pants not only offer comfort and style but also provide a welcome layer of warmth.

We received the insulated version of these pants – which comes complete with a warm inner lining. The feel is luxuriously soft against the skin, ensuring comfort even during chilly outings to watch the Timbers, Ducks, or Beavers play. While the added insulation may slightly limit movement, particularly compared to running-specific attire, it’s a compromise gladly made for the cozy warmth they provide. They also have unlined versions as well.

Despite the slight restriction in movement, these pants fit true to size in length. The absence of a button or snap closure at the waist may prompt some to consider sizing up, especially given the additional thickness of the lining. However, the presence of a drawstring (that goes through the waist – eliminating need for a belt) and zipper ensures a snug yet comfortable fit, allowing for a bit of wiggle room at the waist.

Features
  • 70% Cotton / 26% Nylon / 4% Elastene
  • Embarq dura-stretch cotton nylon blended canvas
  • Zippered front pockets
  • Cell stash back pocket
  • Crotch gusset
  • Back ventilation panel
  • Slim straight fit, 14″ leg opening / 32″ inseam

The Hebrides jacket is also a casual wear item that provides style along with enhanced comfort and warmth. The jacket is not insulated, so it is not providing the same depth of warmth as the insulated pants. It is, however, a great option to layer over a T-shirt or long sleeve shirt and – paired together with the Layover Pants – its a solid look. The fabric is 100% cotton canvas, definitely a stronger and more heavy-duty construction. The snap closures on the front is definitely preferred for quick and easy temperature regulation.

The black color way seems to attract hair, pretty consistently, so make sure you have a sticky roller nearby to stay fresh.

Features
  • Unlined shirt jacket
  • Organic cotton canvas
  • Snap front and pocket closures
  • Handwarmer pockets
  • Reinforced elbow panels and snap cuffs
  • Classic overshirt fit

While not designed explicitly for running, these items perfectly align with the needs of active individuals in the Pacific Northwest. Ideal for transitioning seamlessly between running and other spring or fall activities, they epitomize the versatility that defines our outdoor lifestyle.

Think of them as the go-to pieces for those impromptu adventures or leisurely days out – the kind where you make the most of every moment. Having reviewed Roark gear for years, we can attest to their enduring quality. Many of these pieces still hold a cherished place in our closets, while others have been worn until they’re threadbare, a testament to their durability and reliability.
