The Running:
Little did I know, Boston offers a plethora of running opportunities. During our stay near downtown, we discovered numerous routes weaving through the downtown corridor, perfect for picking up some miles. Personally, we opted to take the subway and explore different routes back into the downtown area rather than simply retracing our steps. Both options are viable, but the variety of routes pleasantly surprised me.
Pleasure Bay:
- This location offers a scenic coastal route perfect for runners seeking a refreshing breeze and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make it ideal for all fitness levels.
- Starting at Castle Island, enjoy a loop around Pleasure Bay, approximately 2.3 miles long. Or extend miles by running there from downtown or extend your run along Boston Harbor Beach.
Charles River Esplanade and Dr. Paul Dudley White Bike Path:
- This is scenic route along the iconic Charles River, providing runners with expansive water views and lush greenery.
- There are plenty of opportunities for extending miles with out-and-backs or loops on both sides of the river.
The Experience:
At View Boston, visitors are treated to an unforgettable experience high above the bustling heart of the city. It’s a great spot to check out the city and look out for your Boston Marathon landmarks. The observation deck sits atop the Prudential Tower and offers 360-degree panoramic views of Boston’s skyline.
You will see historic landmarks (Fenway Park was a person excitement of mine), waterfront, and even Harvard in the distance. The Virtual Viewers were pretty awesome to go a little more in depth as to what you are looking at.
Those who are brave can head to The Lookout – an elevated viewing platform. But regardless of if you stay inside or outside, both really offers a captivating perspective of the city’s beauty and charm.
There is a bistro and bar located on the observation deck offer a perfect spot to unwind and savor delicious refreshments while soaking in the breathtaking views. The Beacon Restaurant has a variety of cool packages that come with admission and food / drinks.
Inside, View Boston offers an array of captivating experiences beyond the skyline. The centerpiece is a dynamic 3D model of the city, employing projection-mapping to vividly illustrate its seasonal shifts and cultural festivities.
Additionally, visitors can utilize a handy tool to zoom in on specific neighborhoods, uncovering attractions and dining options suitable for whatever you desire.
For those seeking a more immersive experience, a 270-degree theater screen provides street-level exploration of various neighborhoods and exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpses of popular attractions. (Caution advised for those prone to motion sickness!) Even make your own printed schedule for your trip with what you discovered!
View Boston is a must-visit for runners because it gives you a bird’s-eye view of the city’s layout and cool spots to hit during your runs. Plus, it’s a fun way to get inspired and discover new routes while taking in Boston’s awesome scenery from up high. You can even see the finish line of the Boston Marathon!
