Reflecting on the GEL-CUMULUS, we can trace our reviews back almost to the inception of this blog. It has consistently embodied a classic and uncomplicated running shoe option. We value it for its accessibility, reliability, and unwavering commitment to its namesake. Priced affordably at $140, it caters to comfort and appeals to the masses.

While we frequently receive complimentary running shoes for review, it feels somewhat unjust to compare this shoe to others boasting additional enhancements or specialized technologies, such as carbon plates or advanced materials. Undoubtedly, there are shoes in the market with such features, and for those seeking optimized speed and cutting-edge running tech, they may be worth the investment.

However, the CUMULUS line occupies its own niche – one of straightforward cushioned comfort. It caters to individuals like us, who may not be logging extensive miles weekly or relentlessly chasing personal records. For many of us, comfort and reliability take precedence over maximal performance. These shoes serve as a steadfast companion, ensuring feet remain content and propelling forward. In this regard, the shoe truly excels.

Looks:

In the realm of footwear aesthetics, we encounter a wide spectrum of styles. Often, shoes flaunt bold designs to captivate attention. Upon unboxing these shoes, my wife remarked, “well, those are boring.” Surprisingly, my reaction differed. While I appreciate flashy footwear, I found this teal colorway surprisingly appealing. It strikes a balance between simplicity and flair, exuding a subtle yet captivating charm. Given that it’s the 26th iteration of this shoe, its understated elegance seems fitting.

Construction:

Having previously tested the 25th version, we observed that the updates in the current iteration are relatively minimal, all things considered. Whether this is viewed as positive or negative largely depends on individual experience, but we lean towards the positive aspect of this equation.

Upper:

The upper boasts excellent breathability, complemented by an incredibly stretchy tongue, which ensures a snug fit atop the foot. Enhanced further by a semi-cushioned collar (not the most cushioned, but still nice), the shoe offers exceptional foot support. I found that slipping them on required minimal lacing adjustment; once on, I felt securely locked in and ready to hit the ground running.

Midsole:

Given the “CUMULUS” in the name, there’s an inherent expectation for a luxuriously cushioned ride. This shoe certainly delivers on that front, boasting one of the plushest midsoles I’ve encountered in quite some time. While the NIMBUS is probably softer and plusher overall, the CUMULUS has a bit more spring to it.

The abundant cushioning  and spring was immediately noticeable from the first step. While some individuals, myself included, may occasionally struggle with excessively cushioned midsoles that lead to sore feet, I’ve found that this hasn’t been much of an issue during my testing period, spanning a few weeks. However, it’s worth mentioning that I’ve typically capped my runs at around 5 to 6 miles due to my history with cushioned shoes. Your mileage may vary depending on your own experiences and preferences. Nevertheless, if you don’t encounter similar challenges, I can’t imagine you wouldn’t appreciate the indulgent feel of this midsole.

It’s worth mentioning that a common concern with overly cushioned midsoles is a lack of responsiveness. The softness can sometimes result in a sensation of the foot being cradled without much rebound on the push-off. While this could potentially be the case with these shoes, it’s important to recognize that they aren’t necessarily designed for speed-focused running.

Instead, they seem to excel in finding a sweet spot for many of us who typically engage in 3 to 5 runs per week, covering distances ranging from 15 to 25 miles. In this context, where comfort and maintaining a consistent pace are paramount, these shoes truly shine.

Outsole:

The outsole of the shoe combines EVA and rubber, offering comprehensive rubber coverage across the entirety of the foot. This marks a significant upgrade from previous version. The enhanced outsole appears to offer improved grip and cushioning, resulting in a more confident and comfortable running experience.

Overall:

It’s worth noting that Asics currently offers a plethora of exciting shoe options. Having reviewed many of them, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the company’s resurgence in delivering innovative running choices. While this particular shoe might not be my top pick in a life-or-death scenario, it certainly doesn’t mean it’s subpar. On the contrary, it’s consistent, reliable, and fulfills its intended purpose admirably.

Moreover, its price point is commendable, reflecting Asics’ commitment to providing quality footwear accessible to a wide range of runners. This shoe stands as a testament to Asics’ overall lineup, which offers a myriad of appealing options. Overall, it’s a fantastic choice for most runners and promises to carry you through many miles this year.
