In the annals of our running journey, Asics holds a special place as the brand of my first real pair of running shoes around 2012. While not initially a running shoe connoisseur, a decade elapsed before I laced up another pair from this brand.

Over the past few years, Asics, particularly with models like the GEL-NIMBUS 25 and GEL-CUMULUS 25, has firmly established itself as an impressive creator of quality running footwear. Now, our focus turns to the latest addition, the GEL-NIMBUS 26.

Looks:

The visual appeal of the GEL-NIMBUS 25 pair we reviewed was truly exceptional, making it challenging to find a comparable counterpart. The crisp and clean aesthetics of that pair, particularly in the colorway we reviewed, were simply outstanding.

While the GEL-NIMBUS 26 pair we reviewed, a navy version, maintains an impressive and sharp appearance, it doesn’t quite match the allure of the previously mentioned colorway. However, it’s important to note that the 26 offers a diverse range of options with a total of 11 available colors. This variety caters to a wide spectrum of preferences so there is something for everyone – from simple to classically unique to flashy.

Construction:

The GEL-NIMBUS 26 brings forth subtle modifications from its predecessor, without undergoing a complete overhaul, and this proves to be a positive aspect. Speaking of the 25, there are some (duh) similarities and differences between the two.

The upper has been reformulated and the tongue and collar are called Plush Fit – and it is absolutely that. Such a joy. There is a bit of extra weight (like really minimal) from some added rubber to the outsole, and “supposedly” a bit of a firmer midsole (though the construction appears identical to the 25 and does not feel firm by any means).

The latter is where some people who looooooved the 25 have expressed a tiny bit of pause, but I don’t have much to say other than its a comfortable and solid ride.

Upper:

The redesigned mesh maintains optimal breathability for all conditions. While the overall aesthetic closely resembles the 25, the step-in feel remains pleasing. And man do I mean PLEASING. These shoes slip on so amazingly well and just feel so good and snug in the right places. They are one of those pairs of shoes where – when you are debating which pair to toss on – these call out to you because you know how great they are to step into.

A slight alteration in the lacing structure is noted, with no significant impact observed. Despite potential concerns of additional lace bite for those who tie their laces snugly, the shoe’s excellent foot hold renders this a minor consideration.

Midsole:

ASICS wisely refrained from tinkering with the successful midsole of the 25. Maintaining the identical stack height and drop, the internal material ensures the plush ride remains consistent. If you were a fan of the 25, the 26 promises a similar enjoyable experience.

Although I can’t directly cross compare with the 25 (it was reviewed by another blogger), I can say that the midsole is on the more cushioned side of the spectrum. In fact, I found that this shoe was actually TOO cushioned for me. It felt absolutely wonderful when pulling on and some short miles, but after a 5k or so, my feet just felt super unsupported due to the plush midsole. I tried over more than a few runs, but the same response continued. If this isn’t an issue for you, you will likely love the plush feel – but beware if you need firmness in the shoe.

Outsole:

The outer construction sees slight modifications, introducing additional rubber on the outsole and a revised design (Asicsgrip and Ahar+) for improved traction. The continuous rubber along the entire outer length, a departure from the non-rubberized split between the forefoot and hell in the 25, adds a marginal increase in weight.

Nevertheless, for most runners, a half an ounce is unlikely to significantly impact performance.

Overall:

In essence, the Asics GEL-NIMBUS 26 builds upon the success of its predecessor, delivering a reliable running experience with thoughtful enhancements to its construction. If you love super soft shoes, these are going to be regular in your rotation.
