Style Meets Performance: Ocean & San’s Aims to Redefine Comfort and Functionality for Cyclists

Runners enjoy the luxury of blending into most any coffee shop, clad in a simple shirt and shorts without drawing undue attention. The same, however, cannot be said for cyclists. There is a couple we often see at our local winery, fully decked out in high-tech cycling gear from head to toe. While it’s not odd per se, my lingering thought isn’t about their eccentricity but rather the discomfort one might feel in such an outfit.

I have run to many breweries and restaurants in my day. And while no one is staring at me, I can still be both uncomfortable and self-conscious in my 5-inch shorts and neon tech-shirt. I can only imagine how I’d feel in top notch cycling gear.

The Company:

This sort of idea marked the birth of Ocean & San, a California-based company born out of a shared frustration with the stark contrast between cycling and comfort. The founders, weary of donning gear designed for competitive racing embarked on a mission to redefine cycling apparel.

Ocean & San views cycling not just as a sport but as a lifestyle—a source of freedom and joy on two wheels. And as someone who views running mostly through the same lens (just with feet instead of wheels), we were intrigued to learn more.

The Idea:

Ocean & San’s vision extends beyond the obsession with aerodynamics, speed, and pure performance. There’s a time and place (and companies) for that. Instead, they aim to create cycling apparel that seamlessly combines functionality, style, and comfort.

“We were tired of riding an hour to a coffee shop in gear that was designed to win The Tour. There was a large disconnect between how we were riding and what we were wearing.”

I think there is an easy comparison to be made in the running world as well. There is a growing number of shoe companies who are putting out $200+ super shoes designed for speed, but that’s not exactly the shoe you want to don when you meet a friend for lunch after some speed work. The running “crossover” shoe is popular – and for good reason. So this idea in a cycling sphere makes complete sense.

The Gear:

Currently Ocean & San has three main categories of clothing:

We would also be remiss in mentioning that Ocean & San is currently developing a running shirt – so stay tuned to their socials for that info!

The Review:

We recently checked out a few items from their arsenal – the All Day Shirt and Pathfinder Socks.

All Day Shirt

The All Day Shirt is the staple of Ocean & San line. Initially presenting themselves as simple, classy tops akin to those seen on every street in America, these shirts harbor a sophisticated fusion of style and functionality designed to seamlessly integrate into the cycling lifestyle.

The collection, featuring around 10 styles and available in three muted colorways—dark navy, mauve, and eucalyptus—offers a versatile wardrobe staple with a range of pairing options. While each shirt maintains a fundamental simplicity, they vary in details, with some featuring minimalistic front pockets and others showcasing intricate graphic artwork on the back.

This understated and universally appealing aesthetic may not overtly scream “cycling top,” but it serves as a testament to the brand’s commitment to versatile design. There’s nothing overboard in their looks – they just look so normal and I am not sure anyone would recognize this as a cycling top…

What truly distinguishes these shirts is a thoughtful inclusion that resonates with experienced cyclists—the integration of storage pockets on the back. In a nod to practicality, Ocean & San ensures that, even in their most casual designs, functionality remains paramount.

I still own a few technical cycling tops from my time prepping for my first (and only) triathlon. Those storage pockets on the back are necessary and clutch for maintaining hydration and keeping things locked away so you can cycle at your best. The All Day Shirts include these on the backs of the shirt, because duh. It just makes complete sense.

Ocean & San is not saying to ditch your cycling needs in lieu of a more casual aesthetic. Instead, the All Day Shirts embody the idea that one can have both—a streamlined top that meets the demands of cycling.

They are also much more than a tee shirt with pockets. They offer a soft and pleasant feel that elevates the wearing experience. A firsthand account from my more cycling-centric brother-in-law revealed that these shirts not only excelled in storage functionality, showcasing minimal bounce, but also delivered the performance one expects from specialized cycling tops. He also specifically noted that the shirt looked better and more “normal” than any other top in his collection.

Pathfinder Socks

Investing in quality socks may seem like a niche luxury, but the value becomes crystal clear over time. After enduring countless disappointments with subpar options, I took the plunge a few years ago (2019, if I remember correctly) and invested in 20 pairs of padded, ergonomic, and admittedly pricier socks. The initial sticker shock was eclipsed by the long-lasting satisfaction—they’re still in my possession, and my feet have never been happier.

The decision not only saved me from frequent replacements but also spared the landfill from unnecessary sock waste. Always on the lookout for superior alternatives, I was happy to check out the Pathfinder Socks, a blend of casual aesthetics and optimal performance.

Designed for cyclists, these Italian-made socks boast a composition of 90% Polyamide and 10% Elastane Q-Skin fabric. Q-Skin technology, featuring interwoven silver ions, activates upon contact with sweat molecules, offering superior comfort and breathability during intense rides.

The Pathfinder Socks go beyond mere style, delivering essential features for active individuals—breathability, moisture-wicking, abrasion resistance, and anti-microbial properties. In essence, they embody everything one desires for cycling (or running).

They come in three colors.
