Everyone in the PNW knows the need to have a solid winter weather top. For most of the state, a super bulky and super-cold-tested jacket is nice, but not altogether necessary most of the time. What IS necessary is functional outerwear for those November-March days that can withstand those 35-40+ degree temperatures.
I recently checked out the HOKA Hooded Down Jacket, an insulated jacket that is equal parts style, comfort, and construction. It holds up perfectly well for Pacific Northwest winters (and beyond).

The Hooded Down Jacket is extremely versatile. It is nice enough to wear out on the town on a chilly evening, but isn’t too flashy to not use when tossing on to do some yardwork in the rain. Basically, it’s easily appropriate for a cold weather hike, as a pre- and post-race warm up – and everything in between. The jacket is enhanced with a water-repellent finish, perfect for Oregon winters.
It is also quite comfortable, so much so that I sometimes hate taking it off. In fact, as I’m writing this, it is the middle of December at 6pm, and I haven’t taken it off at all today because I feel like I’m being casually hugged by the jacket. It’s that nice. HOKA calls it a cross between a jacket and sleeping bag – and that’s a good descriptor!
As someone who typically wears a Medium in most instances, I found that the sizing was pretty consistent. If you fall between two sizes, and are wanting a roomier fit to layer, then go up. If you are looking for a more slimming profile, choose the lower one. I also really appreciate the length of the sleeves, something that individuals with longer arms (myself included) struggle to find.
There are two external zipped pockets, two internal zipped pockets and can effortlessly be packed into an internal pocket for easy storage on the go. It also features a one-touch hood bungee for a secure and customized fit, ensuring maximum comfort in various weather conditions.
As far as function and construction goes, HOKA very seldom (if ever) gets it wrong. I have a number of HOKA items in my closet (from shoes to apparel and beyond) that continue to hold up year after year, even despite tons of wear and tear.
Overall, this is a fantastic jacket and one I continue to feel good wearing, both in comfort and in sustainability. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
The Hooded Down Jacket comes in two color – Rust (reviewed) and Violet Bloom.
