Race Preview: 2021 Tillamook Burn Trail Run (Timber)

According to the television show Cheers: “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.” And sometimes, you want to go for a long, long, long run in the woods where the birds keep you company. For those times, Tillamook Burn exists.

Tillamook Bun 50 Mile and 50K are back this spring after being cancelled in 2020 (because…well…2020). Both races use the rugged and scenic trails in Tillamook State Forest, where trees, flowers, and waterfalls will surround runners throughout the miles. The 50K route is an out-and-back, while the 50 Mile uses an added loop to complete the distance. Each course is well supported by multiple aid stations packed with water, energy drink, snacks, and first aid supplies. Some aid stations are also cut-off points because the races do have time limits for completion. So, grab the snacks and get moving.

Welcome to the Tillamook Burn! With beautiful and challenging early-season 50 Mile and 50K courses, ‘The Burn’ has become a festive springtime trail running tradition. Both races start and finish at historic Reehers Camp in the lush and rugged Tillamook State Forest, halfway between Portland and the Oregon Coast. Prepare for rumbling waterfalls, brisk stream crossings and a million shades of green, as brilliant spring foliage, fiddleheads and blossoms line every inch of this course.

To keep all runners and volunteers safe, new safety measures are in place for 2021 participants, including facial coverings at start and finish, wave starts, and limited direct interaction with volunteers. Heightened sanitation will be supported and expected throughout the event. And while finishers will be celebrated, the after party will be from a distance and encouraging runners toward their cars and homes soon.

The race is currently full, but interested participants can register for the waitlist and will be contacted depending on cancellations and updates to COVID-19 restrictions.
