Small Race Preview: 2019 Britt Woods Firehouse Run (Jacksonville, OR) and Firecracker 5k (Harrisburg, OR)

In theory, running is a simple sport, but many races are so elaborate and expensive that they seem to miss the point. Two races in greater Oregon that are bucking this trend are the Britt Woods Firehouse Run in Jacksonville and the Firecracker 5k Run/Walk in Harrisburg. Both races are community events meant to encourage runners of all levels to come together.

Britt Woods Firehouse Run is organized by Southern Oregon Runners, a not-for-profit running organization. On the trails near Britt Gardens, participants have the option to complete a 1.9 mile short loop, a 4.3 mile long loop, or run the full 10k that combines both loops. Runners of all ages can also participate in a 100 yard fun run. Prizes are awarded to the top three overall finishers, and ribbons are given to the top twenty.

The Firecracker 5k is a small but explosive event – literally, as participants are encouraged to donate for fireworks. Organized by Eclectic Edge Racing, this race provides a 5k course for participants ages 4+ to run or walk, and a 400m kids dash for children ages 4-12. Medals and awards are given to top finishers, kids receive a participation bracelet, and all entrants receive a shirt.

This summer skip the frills and focus on why you love running in the first place. Both the Britt Woods Firehouse Run and Firecracker 5k are fun local races that will help get your 4th of July week started on the right foot!

About Kate Ellingsen (36 Articles)
Running brings me immense joy and peace. Like the fabled tortoise, my pace is slow and steady. I ran my first marathon in 2011, then lost my focus following a cross country move in 2012, gradually working my way back to 26.2 miles. I have no aspirations of qualifying for the Olympics or even Boston. The road is big enough for all runners, and my only goal is to be happy and well. Location: Portland, OR 26.2 x 6 & 13.1 x 13

  1. The cool thing about the Britt Woods Firehouse run is the staggered start based on age and gender. In theory, a 60-year-old woman has just as much chance of crossing the line first as a 25-year-old male. That makes winning one of the coveted Top-20 ribbons uniquely special.
