Race Preview: 2018 Deschutes River 50k (Bend)

The Deschutes River is a beautiful landmark in Central Oregon’s landscape, and if you’ve ever wanted a chance to race in a great Bend location, the 2018 Deschutes River 50k could be calling to you on October 20th.

This inaugural race will take place in the Deschutes National Forest where participants will get to run a course made up of mostly single-track and fire roads through the lush woods and meadows. The Deschutes River will make a guest appearance throughout the first 11 miles of the 50k loop before turning west toward Mt. Hood. It will reach a maximum elevation of 5,900 feet and the second half of the race will be downhill. There will be 6 aid stations along the way and they will be well stocked with things like water, electrolyte, coffee, soda, bananas, chips, bacon, candy, deli meat, grapes, potatoes, goldfish, cheese, and gummy bears. There will also be salt pills, antacids, Vaseline tape, and sunscreen. This will be a cupless event, so please be sure to bring your own drinking vessel.

Drop bag service will be offered at aid station #3 (junction 43, mile 15.) Keep it the size of a shoebox and be sure to label it with your first and last name as well as your bib number. It’s advised that you don’t leave fragile items in your drop bag. All bags will be shuttled back to the start/finish every hour starting at 12:00PM. Pacers and crew will not be allowed for this race, but spectators can come cheer you on!

The race will start and end at the LOGE Entrada and it is here that there will be a great post-race celebration with food, beer, and music. The cut-off is 10 hours, so you’ll have to get to the end by 6:00PM for your “official” finish, but the course will be kept open later for runners who are just doing it for the journey and don’t care about the time. The festivities will begin at 12:00PM and go until “quiet time” at 8:00PM, so please respect other LOGE Entrada guests at this time. There will be “real” food available at the finish as well as some local brews

If you’d like to stay at LOGE Camps, there will be a 10% discount if you use the promo code ‘Everlong10’ when registering. A few amenities listed are an espresso bar, beer taps, pool and hot tub, outdoor kitchens with grills, wiFi, and it’s dog-friendly. There are also many other accommodations in the Bend area.
