One of the best parts about racing is the ability to pick events that benefit a great cause. The Champions Run for Heroes is a 5K/10K put on the non profit See Ya Later Foundation. Located in McMinnville, about 30 minutes south of Sherwood on 99W, the event is on the grounds of the Evergreen Aviation Museum. It is scheduled for September 8th, with the gun going off at 8am, followed by a kids half mile 45 minutes later. The proceeds are split between the McMinnville Fire Department, Police Department, Tamhill County Sheriffs Office and the See Ya Later Foundation.
Registration is currently online until September 7th at 3pm. It is $35 for either distance and includes a shirt, while the kids 1/2 mile is $5. Race fees go up to $40 on event day. There is also a discounted rate for firemen and police officers to participate, which is pretty unique and could make a fun aspect for participants as they ‘run from the cops’. There is going to be a supervised kids zone for those aged 2-12 allowing the parents to run without worry. This will be $5 a child and can be prepaid online as well. Packets can be picked up the day before the event at the See Ya Later office (1016 NW Adams St), from 9-6:30 pm or on event day after 7 am.
The official start/finish area is in front of the Falls Event Center at the back of the museum property. Parking is plentiful and the area is easy to find as it is directly off highway 18. The course is flat, consisting mostly of blacktop and a little gravel. It employs the roads and parking lots around the museum, with about half of it being on a wide trail that goes around the buildings and vineyard. Well placed course marshals and marking make it easy to stay on course. Strollers are welcome, but they ask that pets are left at home.
I’ve helped with this event for the past 3 years as well as participating. It is a great local race, low key and well done. It’s good to see the proceeds go to local causes. The course is fun and quick, off the beaten path a little bit in an area not many people run in. They have great raffle prizes and gifts for the top overall finishers. There are usually a few vendors as well as music playing. The environment and people alone make it one of the top 5 races in the area.
