Race Preview: 2018 Barrel to Keg Relay (Philomath)

Relays are all the rage. Have you tried the Barrel to Keg Relay yet? If not, you should consider giving this one along the Oregon Coast a try on July 14th, 2018. This relay is a 69 mile run compromised of 14 legs.  It will begin at the Harris Bridge Vineyard west of Philomath and finish up at Rogue Ales Brewery in Newport. Like all great relays, you can make this race as challenging as you want to, by splitting up the run between 2 to 7 people, running it solo as an Ultra Run, or choosing the 35 mile walking relay option. There’s something for everyone and the proceeds benefit Community Services Consortium,  which helps people in poverty.

Packet pickup will be available at the Corvallis CSC office parking lot on Friday July 13th from 9:30AM-5:30PM as well as at the Harris Bridge Vineyard starting at 6:30AM. Each team will be required to provide one volunteer on  race day or pay a $100 fee to opt out if you can’t find one.

There will be wave assignments for the race from 7:00AM to 9:00AM to help prevent congestion. The start times are based on the 10k predicted times that team members are required to enter when registering. Team captains will find out the wave assignment two weeks before the race. You can check out the course manual now or later. Solo Ultra Runners will need to provide their own support vehicle, as food and water will not be provided at the exchanges. They may also opt for an early 5:00AM start time.

The post-race festivities will take place at Rogue Brewery in Newport starting at 4:00PM. There will be a beer garden, food, and music as well as the awards ceremony. There will be prizes for team name, costumes, vehicles, and of course the fastest finishers in each division. Sponsored prizes will go to teams who have raised the most money for the CSC’s poverty fighting programs. Come stay the night and celebrate, but start planning now, as summer tends to book up very fast!

The cost of this race is $75 a person until June 29th, at which point the cost will increase $10. T-shirts will also not be guaranteed after the 29th. There is a limit of 1000 participants for this race, so register now so you can be one of them!
