Small Race Preview: 2018 Run to the Ruts (Baker City)

Usually when I think about running in the ruts its because I’ve been forced off the road by too many cars or cyclists whizzing by. But in the Run to the Ruts event, there is nothing to get in your way of enjoying a few miles in the great outdoors.

This annual event is scheduled for National Trails Day and donates all proceeds to the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, which supports education and preservation work in our beloved Pacific Northwest. The timing of the event means that your friends can come along to cheer you on for free, and then celebrate walking some trails with you. This is a “fun run” so timing will be attempted for all participants but not guaranteed. The top three male and female finishers will receive an award, and all participants get a prize upon completion of their race. And with the 5K and 10K events both just $15 (a serious deal!), you could probably talk some folks into the adventure with you.

The 10K is twice around the 5K route, and walkers are encouraged to chose the 3.1 mile option to ensure that everyone finishes in time for the after-celebration. The route includes portions of gravel, paved trails, and dirt trails. There may be hikers on the trail so watch out on the curves that you don’t skid into anyone.

Celebrate National Trails Day by getting out into the wilderness for a morning, or maybe all day long. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and everything else will still be there when you get home.
