I’ve already seen advertisements for winter tires, reminding me of the “Snowpocolypse” from 2016. My email has been receiving an avalanche of circulars for ski resort season passes. On the clear days when “the mountain is out”, it’s obvious that Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St. Helens are pristinely snow-covered and ready for adventure. Time to round up the winter gear!
Crampons are a seriously great tool to keep in any adventure pack for winter (and even summer, depending on where you’re hiking!). The Hillsound Trail Crampons are steps above the basic type you’d strap on for shoveling the sidewalk, but not as hardcore as (or by any means a replacement for) proper mountaineering crampons. But they are incredibly lightweight and easy to pack…and subsequently unpack and put on! Crampons should have two main purposes – to stick to the trail and to stick to your shoes and Hillsound figured out how to easily do both.
I borrowed a pair of these from a friend on my hike up Mt. St. Helens back in June and they did a great job on the snow and ice, and held up well as the trail oscillated between rock and crusty snow. They also come with a small, machine-washable bag to keep your other gear protected, clean, and dry.
Because we’re a running blog, it should be said: yes! You can run in these! They are designed to be flexible and move with your natural stride. One of my favorite Canadian runners recently posted about them on his Instagram. Another of my favorite Instagrammers, a Canadian Vizsla this time, also loves them.
