Race Preview: Halloweenathon 5K, 10K, 15K, and more!

It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-October! It seems like it was just last week that we were roasting in extreme heat, looking at a red moon, and breathing ashes from wildfires. And here we are, in the best season for running, with the best holidays coming up.* First up is Halloween, which means it’s time for the Halloweenathon, now in its sixth year, every one of which has been at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha. Race day is October 28, 2017.

* Not to take anything away from Veteran’s Day (or Memorial Day), of course. Our veterans, those still with us, and those who gave their lives defending the country, deserve to be honored and remembered. So those are pretty awesome holidays too.

As has been the case for several years now, the Halloweenathon offers 5K, 10K, and 15K distance options, plus a 5K obstacle variant. The race course covers most of the south golf course, with each loop comprising 5K. It’s run entirely on the golf cart path, so paved, and it’s mostly flat, though there are some minor dips between miles 2 and 3.

All of the non-obstacle races start at 9:00 a.m. (which is, in my view, a civilized starting time for running!). The obstacle 5K starts at 9:15 a.m. There is also a kid’s race (1 mile timed or 1/4 mile untimed) that will kick off the event at 8:45 a.m.

What are the obstacles? Don’t worry, this is not a one of those hardcore obstacle courses with live electrical wires and other hazards. It’s billed as a family fun run (but it will be chip-timed) with the following activity stations along the way:

● carry a pumpkin 1/4 mile

● ride a broom stick 1/4 mile

● pull a spider out of a sack

● trick or treat on the course

● shake hands with a gorilla

● throw bean bags

Those don’t sound too bad. I remember one year when one of the obstacles was to eat half a donut hanging from the top of the tent – no hands. I tackled that one after having already run the entire 5K for real before trying the obstacles. Trust me, scarfing down half a donut after racing a hard 5K … ugh.

When you’re done running, you can enjoy the post-race Nacho bar. And the costumes!
