The 11th annual Girlfriends Run for a Cure will take place in Vancouver WA on Sunday, October 15, 2017. This event is designed for women and their girlfriends: The shirts are women’s cut long sleeve tech shirts, there will be chocolate, cupcakes, and mimosas, and the finisher’s medal includes a wine opener. The event raises money for three different beneficiaries: Pink Lemonade Project, Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Oregon & SW Washington and Children’s Center.
(Edit 9/20/2017): COURSE UPDATE – Why Racing announced on Facebook that the start line is moving to Warehouse 23 at 100 Columbia Street #102. This is around Mile 1 marker of the original course. The course will now be run clockwise instead of counter clockwise, which means that the big hill is in the beginning mile, with mostly downhill and flat for the rest of the race.
The race starts and ends at Northwest Personal Training in Vancouver. Participants are welcome to race, run, run/walk, or walk the beautiful course. From the start, we’ll head East and then south and downhill towards the Columbia. Quarter marathon participants run along the waterfront for over a mile to a turnaround point at just past mile marker 2, while the half marathoners keep heading east to their turnaround after mile 5. After completing the out-and-back portion, both race distances then take the overpass over SR14 into Fort Vancouver and past Pearson Airfield. At this point, there will be another split in the course, so watch closely for signs and listen to instructions from the volunteers. Keep in mind that during the first mile you had a really nice downhill, and you’ll have to recoup that elevation on the last mile of the course with a short but steep uphill towards the I-5 bridge, but then you can finish strong with a nice rolling downhill to the finish. (End Edit)
The Girlfriends Run also has a great opportunity for men who want to support the race and its cause: The Pink Brigade Guys are a group of up to 50 men who pledge to raise or donate at least $500 each, and they are then invited to be a race volunteer, a lead cyclist, run or walk either race distance, or support the race from afar. Bonus points if they are wearing pink on race day!
After the finish, ever participant will be awarded a beautiful wine opener finisher’s medal. There will be cupcakes and chocolates, mimosas and Deschutes beer, massages and chiropractic care, stretching and acupuncture. There will be an awards ceremony for the quarter marathon at 11am, and for the half marathon shortly after around 11:15am. Everybody is eligible to win door prizes, and awards will be given to the top three finishers overall and masters, as well as top three in each age group.
