For many years, the Kiwanis Fun Run has been a tradition in Wilsonville on the last Saturday of July, and it is the major fundraiser for the local Kiwanis Club. Kids of all ages (through 8th grade) can sign up for free to run some distance (depending on their age) on the running track by Wood Middle School and receive a free shirt, medal, snacks, and free lunch at Chipotle on July 29. To extend the fun to adults, a 5k Fun Run was added to the event in 2016, and this year the Wilsonville Kiwanis 5k will also be chip timed.
The 5k starts at 8am on the running track by Wood Middle and Boones Ferry Primary Schools. There is plenty of parking close by in the school parking lots. The out-and-back (“lollipop”) course takes you past Boones Ferry into Metro’s beautiful Graham Oaks Nature Preserve. After completing the one mile long portion of the Tonquin Trail, runner and walkers turn left into the Villebois neighborhood, loop around Sophia Park, before heading back the way they came. In Graham Oaks, keep your eyes and ears open for birds and wildlife, and on a clear day you will be able to see Mount Hood from several spots on the course.
After the 5k, there will be opening ceremonies of the Fun Run, and the kids runs start at 10am. There are vendor tents, kids activities, and a great opportunity to cheer on the youth athletes.
