On October 29th, two Halloween-themed races are less than 2 hours apart, but a 10am start for one and 4pm for the other. Read on for some info on the Zombie Zoup Run in Sweet Home and the Dia de los Muertos Night Run in Newport.
The Zombie Zoup Run is for both runners and non-runner alike. This isn’t a standard “pick your character” zombie chase – all runners are “survivors”. They are asking for non-running volunteers to dress up, get decked out, and participate by being stationed along the course.
The 2-mile course is run on various city streets with a few small backcountry sections. It looks like I ran portions of this course at the 2016 Sweetheart Run, and that tree-lined South Trail could definitely be spooky (even in the daytime) thinking about zombies lurking behind the greenery.
There will be zoup…er….soup for all participants following the event. and all proceeds will go to Sunshine Industries Unlimited in Sweet Home.

I, admittedly, don’t know much about the Dia de los Muertos holiday. In doing some quick research via Wikipedia, where it is described as:
a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. It is acknowledged internationally in many other cultures. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.
Though the race starts and ends at Rogue Brewery, the course is not revealed yet. My guess (completely unconfirmed) is that this will head down the South Jetty before turning around in South Beach State Park and returning.
