Race Preview: 2016 Run Like Hell 5k/10k/Half (Portland)

Run Like Hell

Even though I typically don’t dress up much myself, I very much enjoy participating in costume runs, since there are so many fun people and costumes to look at during the run. Terrapin’s Run Like Hell runs encourage costumes, and each year there are costume contests as well as a theme. This year’s race is on Sunday, October 23rd, and the theme is going to be ComicCon, which is a very broad subject covering all fandoms out there. (I’m seriously considering the “A girl has no costume” tshirt I saw online!)

The race offers the choice between 5k, 10k, and half marathon. The courses for all distances start and end at Pioneer Plaza, which is a very nice location for the event. Tents with vendors, food, registration and bag check will be set up around the perimeter with lots of space in the center to sit on the steps or mingle with other runners. The area is entirely paved, which is a bonus if it is a rainy morning.

The half marathon starts the morning at 7:45am. Runners start just south of Pioneer Courthouse Square, and they complete the most challenging part of the course first by running up Broadway and Terwilliger Blvd all the way to OHSU, before flying back down on Barber Blvd and Naito Pkwy to the downtown area. The second half of the race is a mostly flat out and back route on close-in NW streets with a finish on Broadway just north of Pioneer Courthouse Square. The kids half mile starts at 8am, and it is a quick out and back course totaling half a mile. The 10k comes next at 8:30am; it skips the jaunt up the hill and stays mostly flat on the half’s second half of the course. Finally the 5k starts at 9:30, and it’s mostly a loop course with some short out-and-back portions added in. After the race, there will be music, cold drinks and hot food.

Terrapin Events’ pricing structure works slightly differently than most others since they don’t announce in advance the dates when prices will increase. Instead they sell a certain predetermined number of entries at a certain price, then as they reach the number of ticket sold, they will announce by email and on Facebook when the next price increase will happen (typically with a few days’ notice). At this point the cheapest “tier one” tickets have sold out, and costs listed below are “tier two” pricing. As race day approaches, it will increase to tier three, and finally there’s race day pricing.
