Race Preview: 2016 Candlelighters Superhero 5K at Cook Park on July 9th

Superman might officially be the best Superhero according to a recent study, but all Superheroes are invited to come run the 4th Annual Candlelighters Superhero 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, July 9th at Cook Park in Tigard. Even if Superheroes aren’t your thing, come run it sans costume and help kids in our community fighting cancer. They, after all, are the real Superheroes.

The Candlelighters is a non-profit organization that provides assistance for kids and families affected by childhood cancer in Oregon and Southwest Washington. They do not receive funds from the American Childhood Cancer Organization and solely rely on donations, grants and fundraisers. All the more reason to grab your cape and lace up your shoes for a fun 5K around Cook Park in Tigard.

The Superhero Festival will include food and beverage vendors, music, a Superhero Coalition, therapy animals from Columbia River Pet Partners, the famous therapy llamas, Rojo & Napoleon and activities for the whole family. Kids 4-17 cost $15 and adults cost $35. Kids under 4 are free. Make sure to register by June 23rd if you want an event t-shirt, shirts are only guaranteed until this date. Online registration closes on July 6th, but day-of registration will be available on race morning beginning at 7:30am.

The 5K Run/Walk starts at 8:30am and a Kid’s 1-Mile Villain Chase will follow at 9:30am. Save yourself some time race morning and grab your packet early. Road Runner Sports in Portland (29 NW 23rd Place) will offer packet pick up from 4-8pm on Thursday, July 7th. The Tualatin Road Runner Sports (7063 SW Nyberg Road) will offer packet pick up from 4-8pm on Friday, July 8th. Participants can also pick up their goodies race morning at 7:30am. This event is chip timed and the course includes plenty of trees and paved trails along the Tualatin River through Durham City Park. Miles will be marked and there will be water stations along the way. Awards will be given out for top finishers in each age bracket and there will be a a costume contest. Awards will be given for the most original Superhero, the biggest group, the best villain and the best duo.

Superman might have the title of the ‘Best Superhero,’ but I don’t think he has anything on these mini-Superheros. Life has been unfair to these kids, but they are making the best of it. The Candlelighters and this run help families smile again with aid and activities that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. Send out a bat signal and round up all the Superhero wanna-be’s you know and come run or walk the Candlelighters Superhero 5K. It’s a run that really makes a difference for people in our community.
