The Cook Park Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k keeps it simple: there’s chip timing, and homemade medals, and cap of 100 runners. The half and full marathon route is a 4.37 mi loop through the paved and dirt trails in Cook Park, run repeatedly (three times for the half, six for the full). There’s an aid station at the start/finish, and an optional tech t-shirt available for sale.
The small scale and low registration cost bring out some participants, but many of the runners have their eyes on a bigger prize: placing in the overall Firecracker Triple rankings, or qualifying to become a Half Fanatic or Marathon Maniac. For runners hoping to conquer three races in three days, look no further than the Firecracker Triple, which consists of two events put on by “Marathon Freak” Steve Walters (the Cook Park Marathon, Half & 5k, and the Stars and Stripes Marathon, Half & 5k) and the Foot Traffic Flat (which isn’t affiliated). If you’ve ever run back to back half marathons, or full marathons, you know that it’s a different kind of challenge, and the Firecracker Triple is a great opportunity for runners to push their limits.
