The 5th annual For the Love of Schools 5k and 5-mile run takes place at Tonkin Audi in Wilsonville on Sunday, June 5th. The event donates 100% of all registration fees back to local schools, and during registration YOU can choose to which school organization you want your entry fee to be donated.
There are several ways in which schools earn funds from this event. First off, and most importantly, 100% of all registration fees are donated to the school organization of your choice. The current list of school districts to choose from include Canby School District, Gladstone School District, Lakeridge, North Clackamas School District, Oregon City School District, Parkrose School District, Sherwood School District, West Linn-Wilsonville School District, Woodburn School District. However, if you don’t see your organization of choice, you can add it in the text box during registration. If you have no particular school affiliation, you can check the “Share the Love” box, and the race organizer will distribute your funds where they are most needed.
Additionally, middle school and high school students compete in their divisions, and the prize money for the top three middle school and high school finishers will be donated to their schools as well. Finally, the school for which the largest number or participants registers, also receives a prize.
This year, the distances offered are 5k and 5 mile. The 5 mile run/walk starts first at 8am, followed by the 5k at 8:30am. Both races start and end at the Tonkin Audi dealership, and the course is closed to vehicle traffic until 10am. Participants start running south on Boones Ferry Road along the interstate, then turning right onto Boeckman Road leading across the Coffee Creek wetlands. The traffic roundabout is the half-way point for the 5k and turnaround point for both distances. This is where a water station will be located, and last year the Wilsonville High School jazz band played some encouraging tunes. 5k participants will return exactly the way they came, turning left onto Boones Ferry Road towards the finish, while 5 milers will keep going straight across the interstate and onto the Mentor Graphics walking path before returning back again on Boeckman Rd to Boones Ferry Rd and to the finish.
The Audi After-Party is definitely worth sticking around for. There will be food and drink (included in the 5k and 5M registration), and beer for those of legal drinking age. There will be music, possibly some cars on display from Tonkin Grand Tourismo, raffle prizes for kids; there will be vendors and activities. The 0.5 mile Mascot Dash will also take place at 10am. Youth ages 10 and under can register for the Mascot Dash for $10, while those over 10 register for $20.
