Race Preview: 2016 Energy Events Rum Run

This is one event I have been attending for years and can’t get enough of. It is one of the few 10k’s I do every year. The energy and fun is unmatched by any other event, due to the aptly named Energy Events team. So, the first thing you need to do is mark Saturday, May 21 on your calendar as the day to head over to Big Al’s in Beaverton. Then, follow the registration link and sign up for the race of your choice. There are both 5K and 10K distances, as well as a Tiki Run for the kids. This is a new location, but I am sure they will do a great job as they have in years past.

Register before the 7th to receive a shirt with your entry. Registration for either of the distances is $50, with a special cost of $18 for participants 18 years of age or younger. The kids tiki race is $18 and in previous years they separate it into waves to give the little ones a chance without being crowded by the big kids.

On race day registration opens at 7 am, with gear check and the kids zone opening 30 minutes after. The 10k goes off at 8:30 am, the 5K 15 minutes later. They start the kids races at 10:15, awards to follow for the big races at 10:45. Throughout the event, there are usually numerous booths to check out, upbeat music playing, and post race festivities include mai tai’s and great food.

Two of my favorite aspects of running are the community and energy. This event has proven to have a lot of both, which is why I continue to return. I’m sure the new location at Big Al’s will lend itself to a fun course and I look forward to heading up there on May 21st for a great morning and hopefully chase my 10k pr.
