If you’re looking to do a fun, but slightly challenging race that doesn’t follow the “gimmicky”, and often disappointing, theme of many “fun runs”, then this is a great race to check out!
If you’ve ever seen the T.V. show, Shark Tank, then you may have seen episode #522, where Rugged Maniac described their race, why it’s different, their success, and their ideas for their future races. Mark Cuban (billionaire and owner of the Dallas Mavericks) was convinced that Rugged Maniac would be a huge hit, and after investing over a MILLION dollars into Rugged, helped make it THE obstacle race to run each year!
Here’s the description of the actual Portland course to expect this year..”Rugged Maniac is returning to Portland International Raceway on June 20th with 25 epic obstacles and 1 rockin’ party! Here’s how it works: Register for the race and you’ll get a chance to run our 3-mile course where you’ll climb towers of shipping containers, rocket down a massive water slide, crawl through underground tunnels, leap over fire and experience some BIG new obstacles (trampolines?!)! As if that weren’t awesome enough, before and after you run you’ll get to party with thousands of other maniacs in our day-long festival where you can ride mechanical bulls, pretend to be a kid in our adult bounce houses, dance your butt off in the festival and enjoy lots of new games and activities!”
Last year, I had the privilege of running this race in the morning, then afterwards, volunteering with a few others at one of their obstacles. I can honestly say that they delivered on everything they promised! The obstacles were everywhere, each more fun then the last. It is a tad physically challenging, but don’t let that scare you off. Participants are GREAT about helping each other get through every obstacle, and if you feel you just don’t want to attempt one, no one will look down on you for skipping it.
Each participant this year will receive a free beer, awesome T-shirt, free photos, and for the first time….A MEDAL! 😉
