Race preview: 2015 Tonkin for the Love of Schools 5k, 10k, Half Marathon (Wilsonville, OR)

This will be my first ever Tonkin for the Love of Schools event! I had first heard about it last year through some running friends, but hadn’t been able to attend as I already had another race planned that day. I am excited to be running it on behalf of Run Oregon this weekend.

Last year in 2014, over $33,000 was raised, and over 900 runners took part in the event (almost double the number of runners from 2013).During the registration process, participants can pick from a list of 30 school programs to donate, and 100% of the registration costs goes directly to the school. As a former school district employee, I have definitely seen the need for funding for programs that directly benefit the students. I’ve heard that this event is very well organized, with a well-supported closed course, and a fun post-race atmosphere. All participants receive a tech shirt as well as a finisher’s medal, food, and beer (if over 21).

For more race details be sure to check out Run Oregon blogger Geli’s preview of the 2015 event, and her race recap of the 2014 event.
