Alone time is becoming more and more sacred as the world grows more interconnected. Learn to truly indulge in your alone time by arranging your relaxation room in way that helps you find peace and inspiration. Whether you have a teensy reading nook or a whole room devoted to clearing your mind, here are a few ways you can spruce up your space to make it a haven of tranquility.

Halotherapy, or salt therapy, is a relatively new trend for wellness spas across the U.S., but people have used natural salts as a remedy for respiratory diseases and skin irritation for centuries. Whether you think Himalayan salt is just a folk remedy or you swear by its healing powers, this much is true–it’s a beautiful addition to any meditation room.

Curtains and screens can be useful if you don’t have an entire room to devote to meditation. They help keep your peaceful space distinct from the other areas of your house or apartment. But even if you have all the room you could ask for, curtains and screens are a great way to soften the light coming from fixtures or windows.

Soothing Nature Elements

Spending time in nature has strong restorative powers. Incorporate rocks and plants into your decorating, and use incense or candles with scents like lavender or sandalwood to really evoke nature. And don’t forget the to add in the soothing outdoorsy sounds with speakers or even just a sound machine. But be careful not to clutter the room–you can have so many calming features that they have the opposite effect.

A cushy place to sit is a meditation room essential. Whether you choose a lounger, a comfy chair, a cushion, or soft padding on the floor, make sure a lack of comfort is not distracting you from your ability to rest or focus. As with every other element of your relaxing room, the seating arrangement should be simple and not too elaborate. That’s not to say that you can’t play around with colors or patterns–it’s about whatever helps you find peace.

Art can be a tricky thing to play around with in a meditation room. On the one hand, it should be something powerful enough to positively impact your state of mind. On the other, it should be able to blend into the atmosphere so that it doesn’t become a distraction. Stay away from busy patterns and movement, and stick to depictions of nature, earthy tones, or simple designs in solid colors.
