Every weekend there are many races to choose from, so I love it when one stands out for having an outstanding mission and beneficiary. The Tonkin Run For The Love Of Schools on June 7th is one such run. Now in its fourth year, the race has attracted increasing numbers of participants, many of them students and teachers from local schools, as well as elite athletes who are striving for their sub-15min 5k. The run’s main mission is to raise money for local school programs, and during the registration process you will be asked to choose one of over 30 groups that support programs at local public schools.
The race is organized by Michelle Tonkin of the Tonkin car dealerships, and it starts and ends at the Tonkin Audi/Nissan dealership in Wilsonville. All courses are closed to traffic for the duration of the race. The 5k and 10k is run entirely on paved streets and multipurpose paths. The half marathon includes an out-and-back portion through Grahams Oaks Nature Park (one mile of which is on a pea gravel path) and then joins the 10k loop course for its second half. There is one water station on the 5k, two on the 10k, and five on the half marathon.
After the race, you’ll be able to enjoy treats from food carts, drinks from RAM Restaurant, and pet some of the Ferraris and Maseratis that Tonkin Grand Tourismo brought over. For more information you can read my recap of the 2014 race, and “like” the event page on Facebook.
