After looking at the races that are popping up for 2015, I was pleasantly surprised to see a bunch of old, and new, races showing up in Eugene/Springfield. It seems like there are a lot more events occurring in Eugene in 2015 that I have my eye on, and that is fantastic!

One such race that caught my interest very quickly is the Mardi Gras 5k, occurring Saturday, February 21, 2015. The Mardi Gras 5k is hosted by Pink Buffalo Racing, a local race company based out of Eugene. As this race includes a Mardi Gras party at the Oregon Wine Lab, participants should be 21+ years of age, and please bring ID with you. To enter Oregon Wine Lab, you must be 21.

One thing that immediately stuck out as pure awesomeness about the Mardi Gras 5k to me was the start time. It’s a “non-traditional” start time, with the race kicking off at 4 p.m. For race addicts like me, this means I can still race Saturday morning, and participate in the Mardi Gras 5k – two races in one day, that is my cuppa tea.  And, this race is going to be a nice way to celebrate Mardi Gras, without traveling the NOLA (New Orleans Louisiana).

Celebrate Mardi Gras, you say, Jessica? Yes, indeed, you heard that correctly! After watching the video (belowof the Mardi Gras 5k last year, in 2014, I was super pumped to get this race added to my 2015 race calendar. Definitely give the video, which is just over 2 minutes,  a look see. If you aren’t jazzed up and ready to throw on some Mardi Gras beads, you’re kinda crazy (I mean this with love). Go ahead, give it a view and see what I mean:

See!? That put you in the Mardi Gras spirit, right?! New for 2015, the race begins at 4 p.m., with the start/finish location at the Oregon Wine Lab, located at 488 Lincoln St in Eugene. This is also the area a lot of new breweries are popping up in Eugene, so if you want to bring some friends and come early, or stay late, and check out the awesome breweries in Eugene, this would be a GREAT time to do it.

The race course will be lit, and be held on all paved surfaces. The official course map is in the works, but will be posted shortly on the event website.

Entry fees are currently $20 for the event, if registering by Friday, February 12 at 12 p.m. Same day registration is available beginning at 2:45 p.m. at Oregon Wine Lab, for $25. For those 60 and over, you will receive a $5 discount on registration fees. Event shirts can be purchased for an additional $10 if registering prior to February 1. A limited about may be available for purchase on race day. I always purchase an event shirt for races, as this is my favorite way to remember all the events I run in.

Race day packet pick-up will begin at 2:45 p.m. at the Oregon Wine Lab. Parking is available along Lincoln Street, and local side streets.

On the 5k course, there will be an aid station (thank you Pink Buffalo for doing this – always appreciated!). Walkers are welcome, and with the 4 p.m. start time, you should be finished prior to sundown which will be about 5:30 p.m.

Awards (medals) will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age group who are 21+ years of age

I am very excited that Pink Buffalo Racing is offering the Mardi Gras 5k event so I can get into the Mardi Gras spirit with a race! With the 4 p.m. start time, consider adding this race to your list even if you are racing in the morning! Two races in one day – that is awesome! I hope you can join me and race in this festive 5k in Eugene!
