Race Preview: Survive the Burn

The 2014 Survive the Burn is coming back again to the Salem Riverfront Park on Sunday, September 14. This is another great local Salem event with a unique twist by having a CrossFit component to the event. The CrossFit event features all the fun of a 5k, but interspersed with various strength activities (such as Kettlebell Swings, Burpees, and Bear Crawls) to add to the madness. And seeing who the race benefits, it is easy to see why this was added.
Survive the Burn benefits the IAFF Burn Foundation. Since its inception, the IAFF Burn Foundation has awarded more than $2.5 million to burn research, making it one of the largest sources for burn research grants. The foundation also provides funding and assistance for adult burn survivor retreats, educational workshops for burn camp directors and counselors, burn prevention and education. There will also be a Firefighter 5k Challenge in addition, where actual firefighters can compete wearing helmet, turnouts, and running shoes.
While running swag is just icing on the cake, this event has a history of great, unique medals and awesome shirts.
When: 930a for 10k, 5k, and Firefighter Challenge; 1030a for CrossFit 5k
Where: Salem Riverfront Park
