My best friend and I signed up for the Blooms to Brews Half Marathon so we could run her 2nd Half Marathon together. Little did we know that I would come down with a terrible head cold and she would hurt her foot the week before the race. After thinking about it, we both decided that the best option would be to change our distance from the Half Marathon to the 10k in hopes of completing the race. My friend picked up our packets the day before the race at Get Bold Fitness in Battle Ground, Washington. At packet pickup she was able to change our official race distance from the half marathon to the 10k without any issues. Included In our race packets were our race shirts which is now one of my favorites. It's a beautiful purple teach tee-shirt with tulips on it.

We got up insanely early the morning of the race and prepared our matching outfits complete with matching hair chalk streaked throughout our hair. We carpooled from Battle Ground to Washougal to the start of the race. Parking was in a big open field along right next to the start/finish area. We read that there was no bag check since the race start was right next to parking and we were instructed to keep our belongings in our car, so we did. About 10 minutes before the race we headed out to the start area, went to the port-a-potties without any wait and walked around.

The half marathon started at 8am and the 10k started shortly after at 8:15am. We gathered with the rest of the 10k runners behind the start line and waited for the go ahead before taking off. We ran straight down the road past all the people fishing at Horseshoe Lake, on a road parallel to I-5, and then along Pekin Road for the remainder of the race.  At mile 2 we passed the Holland America Bulb Farms and through a portion of the course that had beautiful tulip fields in bloom surrounding us on both sides of the road.

At mile 2, just past the Holland America Bulb Farm, my friend realized that her foot was hurting too bad to continue and didn’t want to jeopardize her foot any further and keep running.  She decided to turn back. I kept running and after a couple of minutes of running alone I decided to turn back and walk back with my friend. I didn’t realize that this course was an out and back until, during my sprint back to catch up to my friend, I got cheered on by fellow runners thinking I was the lead runner. It was a very unique experience to get to know what the lead runner feels like. I chuckled a little, took in the cheers and caught up with my friend.

We walked the 2 miles back to the finish line and ended the race short. At the finish line we immediately headed towards the beer tent.

They had two beers to choose from and bottles of beer for purchase. They also had amazing pulled port sandwiches that came with the race entry fee. After our beer and sandwich we ventured over to one of the race booths and got an amazing free massage by one of the local massage companies. I enjoyed this course, the race seemed very well-organized, the shirts were fantastic, and the after party was great.

  1. I was there handing out packets the day before! We probably even met 🙂 The t-shirts are great. The purple color is fun and different, and the cut of the ladies shirts is really nice.
