Race Preview: Up the Lazy River 10k in West Linn

up-the-lazy-riverThe 2014 ORRC Up the Lazy River 10k will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26th, 2014 at Mary S Young State Park in West Linn. While the river may be lazy, the runners certainly are not!

(This information will also be published in the May/June issue of the “Oregon Distance Runner,” the magazine of ORRC.)

The “Up the lazy river” 10k starts and ends at Mary S Young Park in West Linn. Parking is available in the park, with an overflow lot located near the park entrance. The course starts out on the park access road and has a very short stretch along Hwy 43 before ducking back onto neighborhood streets. The first half of the course is primarily downhill on Old River Road (behind Marylhurst University) along the Willamette River, offering some beautiful views while you coast along. Right after the turnaround, however, comes a killer hill! This may be a good time to take a walking break while you have some fuel and look forward to the aid station around mile 3.5. Runners will follow Hwy 43 for mile 4, then back into the neighborhood and finally Mary S Young Park towards the finish.

After the race you can look forward to ample food and refreshments. Awards will be given in several categories. Plaques are awarded to overall winners in open and master’s divisions for the run and the walk (male and female, respectively), and ribbons are awarded three deep in all age groups. Uniquely, age groups are every five years below 40 and every age from 40 up.

up-the-lazy-river-socksRace registration includes the chip-timed race, custom designed UTLR socks, and post-race refreshments. During registration you will be able to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project, and to have a sign “In Honor/Memory Of” your favorite war veteran posted along the route.
