Race Preview: Race The Reaper

Expect the unexpected at the 2014 Race The Reaper obstacle course race.  In its 3rd year, this 6+ mile obstacle course at Flying M Ranch in Yamhill, Oregon is never the same.  There are many changes for this year’s event – the first being the date.  This usual Fall event is now on July 19, 2014 and it has changed from a two-day event to one day only.  They have also added a new beneficiary – America’s Fund. America’s Fund provides immediate assistance and continuous support for injured heroes.

Another change for 2014 is that more than half of the 20 obstacles will be different. The addition of a new sponsor, Widmer Brothers Brewing, will bring a new twist.  Kegs will be incorporated into some of the obstacles this year.  Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? (Editor’s Note: Yes!)

This challenging course is one of my favorite events of the year.  In fact, I’ve already begun gathering my team and currently have 3 returning teammates already registered. For us, this event is a “can’t miss!”  Why do we love this event?

  1. The challenge. We never know what to expect, but we can always expect to be challenged.  We usually find many skills we need/want to work on for next year.
  2. The camaraderie.  Participating with a team or just a few friends always makes it more fun.  We help each other out when needed, encourage each other, or sometimes just laugh at each other.
  3. The culmination of a goal – together.  Several of my teammates and I spend time during the year improving some of our obstacle course skills.  We are always coming up with new ideas of how we can work on something.  In fact, one of my teammates installed a climbing rope in his warehouse a couple of years ago so that we could work on our rope-climbing skills.

Another addition this year is Reaper Fit Camp.  Get yourself ready for Race The Reaper by attending one or all three training sessions.  At just $5 each (and proceeds going to Newberg High School Athletics) this is a great opportunity for veterans and newbies alike.

Race The Reaper was the first OCR (obstacle course race) I ever participated in and I’ve been hooked ever since.  It was extremely challenging, but the sense of accomplishment I felt after doing things I was sure I couldn’t do was amazing.  Every year it stretches me and I try something new.  Friends and strangers alike help each other out along the way.  In fact, in an OCR, it seems there are no strangers.  We’re all in it together. So, what are you waiting for? Gather some friends or come solo and join us at Race The Reaper this year!
