Vancouver, Washington. The fourth year Vancouver USA Marathon (VUM) has just been nominated by Runner’s World as “One of the Top Ten Fun-Featured Filled Marathons” in the United States in their January 2014 edition. Runner’s World on-line also listed the best new marathons created since 2008 and again, Vancouver USA Marathon made that list as well.

Runner’s World launched their January issue that showcased 10 marathons and their enjoyment factor. Runner’s World criteria was “to find the best of the new, we looked at US marathons that debuted since 2008 (excluding first and second-year marathons, because even the best organizers need time to iron out glitches) with at least five-hundred participants.” They used criteria such as geographical diversity, runner’s reviews, and sought help from their Chief Running Officer, Bart Yasso, who has been at over 150 marathons since 2008. After much searching, discussing, and analysis, Vancouver USA Marathon made the short list and into their top 10.

Brian Davis, Race Director and Owner of Energy Events which manages VUM, states that “this nomination is not only awesome, but shows that the hard work and passion of our team for organizing this marathon is being shown across the US. It has always been our mission to create a great event that sets us apart from the other races and now one of the most reliable running resources has proclaimed the same. We have put Vancouver USA on the “map of marathons.”

VUM full and half marathon registrations are over 25 percent up over this time last year and have over 31 states represented so far. Part of VUM’s niche and appeal is its intimate size, but has the potential to reach 5,000 total participants. Tim Ahaus, Marketing Consultant for Energy Events explains, “We designed the marathon to have a small, local appeal, but wanted people to travel from around the country to experience it. We used the ‘think global, act local’ approach and now we’re getting the press and notoriety rightfully deserved from everyone’s hard work. This marathon will continue to grow as runners see it as one of the best values anywhere in the US.”

Runner’s World on-line edition continued the accolades their print publication left off on the Vancouver USA Marathon. It included the top nine best marathons created since 2008, again, using the same criteria as they did with their top ten fun featured filled marathons. Since the number of marathons have about doubled from just a decade ago, there are many more choices when it comes to running a 26.2 mile race. However, VUM made it onto this top list as well with Runner’s World stating, “This race is in America’s Vancouver- a city across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon- thus the ‘USA’ in the title. This Vancouver isn’t as populous or cosmopolitan as its namesake in Canada, but its flat and scenic marathon starts and finishes in a pretty downtown park, and you don’t need a passport!”

By the end of December 2013, VUM has registered over 1500 runners/walkers and will limit their overall numbers at 5,000. This year, prize money will be awarded to the top place finishers in the men’s and women’s category for the marathon and half marathon. The marathon winners will receive $500 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. The half marathon winners will receive $250 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place. A 3-day Summer Brewfest is in conjunction with the marathon weekend that consists of 25 breweries & 50 select draft brews. Walkers are encouraged to participate as well. VUM is being developed in close collaboration with a core committee, along with the City of Vancouver and other sponsors. World- renowned race celebrity Bart Yasso will be the master of ceremonies for this year’s race.
