At Run Oregon, we embrace all forms of physical activity beyond just running. Many of our bloggers (and likely many of our readers) are multisport athletes. If you are, or aspire to be, a multisport athlete, we’re excited to have you join us in this new journey. Welcome to Bike Oregon! While many of us participate in running races, Andrew competes in a variety of competitive cycling races in the Pacific Northwest.

I’ve been commuting to work with a loaded backpack for years now. It didn’t use to bother me so much when I was younger and more spry. I’ve been noticing lately, however, that the contents seem to be getting heavier and heavier every year. Maybe it’s just me, but the hefty shifting weight has been getting sketchy on wet days, so I’ve been very stoked with the alternatives that Topeak has to offer.
Their trunk bags are great for errands or “commute-lite” days, and their panniers are perfect for the days I need the extra room. While Topeak has multiple, very capable products to choose from, the gear I’ve been testing is the MTX Trunk Drybag and the Pannier Drybag 24L.
Right out of the package the Pannier feels thick and durable, and the roll top opening gives me plenty of confidence for the down-pour days. Another thing that stood out immediately is how easily it secures to the bike rack with the Topeak Handle Loc system, and just as importantly, how easy it is to remove when I get to where I’m going. It locks in firmly while riding, and it doesn’t sway at all which lets me focus on the road ahead rather than trying to keep the bike upright.
The bag is constructed with waterproof materials, sealed seams and tough fabrics. The overall design is simple and practical, with a clean look and a good amount of storage space for commuting with my laptop, lunch, and a change of clothes without feeling completely overstuffed. On the days when I don’t need to bring everything and the kitchen sink with me, I toss my essentials in the MTX Trunk Drybag.
The MTX Trunk Drybag bag mounts securely to Topeak’s QuikTrack system and feels stable even on rough pavement. Once I slide it on and lock it in, I forget it’s there completely. Some trunk bags sway or rattle once they’re loaded up, but this one stays planted. The rigid foam construction gives the bag a solid, structured feel without adding excessive weight, helping it maintain its shape even when only partially packed.
Like the Pannier, it has a roll top opening which adds extra weather protection while making it easy to expand or compress depending on the load. It also features waterproof materials that help keep my valuables dry during wet rides. Multiple compartments and pockets make it easy to organize tools, snacks, and everyday essentials without everything getting jumbled together. It even comes with a detachable shoulder strap, making it convenient to carry once I’m off the bike.
Overall, these bags have made my commuting and errands much easier and more convenient. Being able to pack everything securely, dry, and take the weight off my back has noticeably improved my day to day riding. Topeak is known for long lasting, rider approved bags, and these two are the epitome of their commitment to making cycling easier and more enjoyable.
