Kicking off the new year with a commitment to fitness is never a bad call—and nothing reinforces that promise quite like a Resolution Run in the opening days of January. The Newport Resolution Run on January 3rd delivers exactly that energy, offering a 5K, 10K, and half marathon, all capped off with a spirited Polar Bear Plunge to round out the experience.
All three distances start out on the same route: At the one-mile mark, the 5k splits off the course to run a turnaround loop, while 10k and half marathon veer south. The 10k turns around at mile 3.3 and heads back the way it came. Both 5k and 10k are flat and run on pavement.
The half marathon extends well beyond the 10K route, adding a challenging stretch through rolling hills and varied—yet undeniably beautiful—terrain over the middle seven miles. After that scenic effort, the course reconnects with the 10K route around mile 10 for the final push to the finish.
All three races finish by passing the start line and heading onto a gravel road, which then leads onto the beach (only about 600 feet of sand thank goodness) and into the Pacific Ocean! The plunging part is optional; participants cross the official finish line before reaching the edge of the water.
