Make a Day of It: Magic of Lights at the Oregon State Fairgrounds

Run Oregon loves running – that’s no surprise. But we also love the Pacific Northwest and all that it has to offer. Running is a part of us, but it does not fully define us. In our “Make a Day of It” feature, we aim to showcase some great local non-running events and highlight where to run and how to make the most of your experience!

The next installment of this series is the Magic of Lights Drive‑Through Holiday Light Spectacle in Salem this holiday season.

The Running:

The fairgrounds aren’t exactly a runner’s paradise, but the good news is that you’re less than three miles from more paved mileage than you could ever need.

If you’re coming from outside the capital city and want to get your run in beforehand, we recommend starting at Riverfront Park in downtown Salem. A loop around the park is roughly a mile, and if you cross the Peter Courtney Bridge (aka “the taco bridge” to locals), you’ll land in Minto Brown Park — the crown jewel of Salem running. The paved paths are beautiful, and you’ll also find stretches of gravel and easy singletrack to mix things up.

One note: if it’s raining — or has recently — certain sections near the Willamette Slough can flood. Even so, there will still be plenty of runnable miles waiting for you, rain or shine.

The Experience:

I don’t know about you, but during the holiday season our family is constantly looking for things to do. Whether it’s the excitement of the holidays or the extra sugar sneaking into everyone’s diet, we’re always hunting for fun activities that keep everyone happy and sane.

There are plenty of options around the valley, but the Magic of Lights Drive-Through Holiday Light Spectacle is a standout — close for me, and central and accessible enough to be worth the trip no matter where you live. And if you’re the type who likes to sneak in a run, it’s easy to pair with some miles. Bring the family along or send them downtown to explore Salem’s growing lineup of holiday shops and eateries. Salem ain’t as lame as it once was!

The concept probably isn’t new to most, but this particular spectacular offers a full mile of holiday-themed displays featuring millions of lights — ideally enjoyed with Christmas music on the speakers and a hot chocolate in hand (though neither is required).

The cost is reasonable per vehicle ($30–$40), and “standard vehicle” covers anything with three rows or fewer, making it a solid value if you’re rolling in with family or friends. You can even purchase tickets in advance (and save a little money) and use them anytime during the season. Just show up, scan in, and you’re on your way.

We checked it out on opening night and had a great time. All in all, it took about 25 minutes to drive through — and since most people probably weren’t quite in the mood for Christmas lights a week before Thanksgiving, the crowds were minimal. I’d expect it to take a little longer once the season ramps up and the line of cars starts to wind through. My youngest daughter soaked up the holiday spirit and was especially into the two light tunnels and the ferris wheel.

Accompanying this event is the Holiday Village which is on-site and adds even more to the experience with treats (alcoholic too, if that’s your thing), community choirs and carolers, a tree maze, and even classic carnival rides. And, parking is free with your Magic of Lights ticket.

Overall, it’s a simple, festive outing that delivers exactly what you want this time of year: bright lights, easy fun, and a dose of holiday magic without any hassle. If you’re looking to kick off the season with something lighthearted and family-friendly, this one is absolutely worth the drive.
