Merino Done Right: Branwyn Tights

It’s fully the time of year of crisp mornings, chilly evenings, and every run feels like it’s in the dark. We’re swapping our tanks for long sleeves, throwing gloves into our running packs “just to be safe”, and wondering if we can still get away with wearing shorts (my general rule is that the temperature has to be below my age to put on long pants for a run!).

But because those chillier days – especially for any runs in the mountains, ski days, or Portland’s inevitable ‘ice storm’ week in February – are creeping up fast, it’s time for us all to learn about Branwyn.

Born in Bend, OR, the founder wanted ethically-sourced performance wear made by and for women. Focusing primarily on innerwear, most items feature merino, seamless knitting technology, and perhaps most importantly: comfort. We all know merino is temperature regulating, anti-microbial, and breathable, but can it also be supportive and lasting? Branwyn thinks so.

Design & Materials

I have been enjoying the Essential Compressive Legging (28″ inseam) – made with POWRspun™ knit, made from a blend of 76% extra-fine merino wool from ZQ New Zealand, 14% nylon, and 10% elastane. That merino content gives the leggings a soft, natural feel while still offering the compression and performance from quality activewear.

Because of the seamless construction, they’re designed for shaping and support. Branwyn’s design avoids excessive seams, which reduces chafing and improves comfort, which we all know is of the utmost importance in the band of a bra or the waist or inner thighs of any bottoms!

Fit & Performance

These leggings come in a 28″ inseam or a 25″ for a more 7/8ths coverage. Branwyn describes the fit as “meant to be snug.” If you prefer less compression, they actually recommend sizing up. The sizing goes from XS to XXL, and I would love to see additional sizing in this lineup in the future. Both length of leggings offer black, deep mocha brown, and night sky blue colorways.

The waistband is wide and comfortable, not digging in or slipping during movement. While these are great to wear on their own, they do not have any pockets, so are more of a gym / yoga / base layer than a running tight (unless paired with an additional running belt or vest).

Durability & Care

The fabric in Branwyun’s products are built to stretch and mold to your body over time. Branwyn notes that with proper care, the leggings will recover and maintain their second-skin feel. They will relax slightly with wear and washing, but haven’t become loose, stretched, or sagging. The high Merino content also gives the leggings natural odor resistance — a huge plus for long days on the trails or multi-day wear!

To note:
  • Transparency risk: Because of the knit structure, there may be some sheerness under deep squats or very tight tension. Depending on your comfort level, you might pair them with darker or more coverage underwear.
  • Heat retention! These are warm, for better or worse in the PNW.
  • Price point: At $158, they’re not cheap, but also, we’re living in the days of higher price points on quality activewear. When you consider the materials, sustainability, construction, and support for a local company, these are on par with market rates.
  • Size advice: Because of the snug fit, some may want to size up, especially if you’re between sizes

Branwyn’s Essential Compressive Legging 28″ is a thoughtfully designed piece of performance gear that does not compromise on comfort or sustainability. They offer a rare blend of technical compression, natural-fiber breathability, and eco-conscious construction.

If you’re in the market for a premium legging that supports serious movement — from run to lounge to hike — and you value sustainable materials, these are absolutely worth considering. I look forward to trying some additional pieces from this company, with an eye on a sports bra and the wide-leg pant!
