I don’t know about you, but I just don’t do well in cold weather. You’d think being born in Canada and growing up in Salt Lake City would’ve toughened me up to the chill—but alas, no. Once those dark winter days hit, I’m perpetually cold.
The temperatures are slowly starting to dip again, so finding the right gear to stay warm is back on my radar. Recently, I’ve been testing out a baselayer from PAKA that promises to help make those frosty mornings and brisk runs a little more bearable.

PAKA’s baselayers, including the PAKA Thermal Hoodie, are solid choices for anyone who wants premium comfort and performance in their cold-weather gear. Already a fan favorite, this refreshed line introduces a new Alpaca Fiber blend that delivers both durability and next-level softness.
The blend is made up of:
- 40% Royal Alpaca Fiber
- 40% Merino Wool
- 20% Tencel
The result is a lightweight but cozy fabric that works hard whether you’re layering up for a run, a hike, or just staying active through the PNW chill.
When it comes to looks, PAKA keeps things clean and modern. The Thermal Hoodie comes in two muted tones (red and black) for now, though rumor has it more colors are on the way. If hoodies aren’t your thing, there’s also a Thermal Crew version that brings the same soft performance without the hood.
Fit-wise, this is a true baselayer—trim and form-fitting. If you plan to wear it on its own, consider sizing up for a more relaxed look. However, I went normal size, and it felt like an ideal fit as sometimes baselayers make me feel like a sausage.
But what really sets it apart are the small design details: flat cover stitches (goodbye, itch and rub), raglan armholes, thumbholes (hugely underrated for warmth), and an ergonomic hood. This isn’t your average long sleeve—it’s thoughtfully designed from top to bottom.
At $155, the PAKA Thermal is also not average and is undeniably an investment. But if you’re someone who spends real time outside during Oregon’s colder months, one great baselayer beats three “meh” ones any day.
Like everything from PAKA, the Ultralight Crew keeps things simple, functional, and comfortable. With plenty of fall and winter adventures on my calendar—from football games to Central Oregon and Utah trips, and even more cold-weather running—the PAKA Thermal is already proving it deserves a top spot in my rotation.
