Run With Neil: Racing for Legacy and Community

Every fall, runners in Scappoose gather for something more than just miles and medals — they gather to honor a dream. Now in its 5th year, Run with Neil continues to celebrate the life of Neil Hoffmann, a passionate runner whose vision extended far beyond the finish line.

Neil believed in the power of track and field to bring people together. As an athlete at Scappoose High School, he dreamed of a facility where athletes and spectators of all ages could compete, connect, and feel proud to call their own. Known for his kindness and willingness to help — always the first to lend a hand and the last to leave — Neil embodied the inclusiveness of the sport he loved. His joy in running was matched only by his desire to share it with others.

The nonprofit organization Run With Neil, a 501(c)3, keeps that dream alive. Funds from the event go toward enhancing opportunities for young athletes, including mental health support, mentorship programs, and scholarships to attend camps focused on building both physical and emotional well-being. In partnership with groups like Dam Worth It, the organization ensures that student-athletes have access to resources that help them thrive.

The course offers a different twist, looping around the grassy athletic areas of Scappoose High School for a true cross-country feel. Participants will finish on the track and cross the line at the football field — a fitting tribute to Neil’s dream of a thriving athletic hub.

Run With Neil is more than a race; it’s a legacy in motion, for all the “Neils” who dream big and work tirelessly to lift up those around them.
