Discover the Beauty of the Rogue Gorge

Whenever I need a dose of sanity, there’s nothing like heading out into the woods and soaking up some nature. Daybreak Racing has lined up some fantastic events, and the Rogue Gorge race feels like a little slice of paradise. Now, Southern Oregon might feel like a world away from the Willamette Valley, but with a course and scenery this stunning, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

The Rogue Gorge race weekend takes place October 18th and 19th, offering three distance options for runners. Whichever distance you choose, expect breathtaking views along single-track trails winding through old growth forest. Union Creek, just over 20 miles from Crater Lake, offers a gorgeous setting with the historic Rogue River providing a beautiful backdrop throughout the race.

The 50k race kicks off Saturday at 8:00 AM and is known as a fairly fast out-and-back course that skirts the rim of the Upper Rogue Wild & Scenic River. Runners will cover 31 miles with roughly 3,000 feet of elevation gain and loss, supported by four well-stocked aid stations.

The half marathon, starting Sunday at 8:00 AM, promises to be a speedy trail race—at least as fast as trail running allows. With just about 900 feet of elevation change, it’s a manageable challenge. The course stretches slightly beyond 13.1 miles (clocking in at 13.4) and features one aid station at mile 7.

Also on Sunday, the 12k race begins at 8:30 AM, offering a lollipop loop that includes about 330 feet of ascent and descent—perfect for a shorter but scenic trail run.

Camping options near the race include the Union Creek campground right by the start/finish area, available on a first-come, first-served basis. For longer stays, Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area, about 20 miles south on Hwy 62, offers year-round camping. The nearby Union Creek Resort also has rustic cabins, a general store, and Beckie’s Café—home of some seriously tasty pie! Additional lodging can be found in nearby Prospect.

After your run, stick around for Daybreak’s classic post-race festivities: good food, drinks, live music, and a lively raffle stocked with swag from sponsors. Don’t forget—the top three male and female finishers will be recognized with awards.

If you want to pitch in before race day, check out the volunteer opportunities—Daybreak always welcomes helping hands to prep the trails!

So lace up your shoes and hit those trails—just be sure to do it safely and enjoy every step!
