If you haven’t experienced the MLK Dream Run, mark your calendar for September 20–21, 2025, because this North Portland celebration is about community, history, and run routes you’ve probably never explored—all while doing good for others.
I first ran this back in 2014, and what stuck with me was how the course takes you through neighborhoods full of heart, color, and story—you’ll wind through the artistic Alberta Arts District, cruise past Mississippi Avenue’s vibrant storefronts, and pass parks like Peninsula and Irvington that feel like hidden gems in the city.

The weekend kicks off on Saturday, September 20, with a huge Kickoff Celebration at Portland Community College – Cascade Campus, running from 10 AM to 6 PM. No races that day, just a soul-lifting vendor village with food, live music, drinks, community vendors, and even a raffle—you might win a round-trip ticket on Alaska Airlines.
It’s a great time to pick up your packet and soak in the pre-race energy.
On Sunday morning, September 21, the real action begins. The USATF-certified races start at PCC again: the 15K goes off at 8:00 AM, the 10K at 8:10, and the 5K at 8:20, all with timing, wave starts, and serious community spirit. Expect a Dave’s Killer Bread grilled cheese (plus Tillamook cheese and a cold beverage) waiting at the finish to fuel your celebration.
Runners also get a swag bag, a Nike t‑shirt, raffle entries, and a chance to win an Alaska Airlines ticket or other prizes—including weight in beverages for age-group podium finishers.
The MLK Dream Run isn’t just about miles—it’s about impact. Proceeds support the Soul District Business Association, funding small business training and their youth entrepreneurship program for ages 16–24. These young leaders get paid internships, real-world skills, media training, and mentorship through the PDX Black Rose Podcast and Greenlighting Black Lives Matter Youth Media Project.
Because of this event, hundreds of BIPOC youths and small business owners receive professional support throughout the year. Behind each bib number is a mission as strong as the run itself.
Whether you’re chasing a new personal best, discovering some new-to-you Portland neighborhoods, or simply want a race that’s full of heart and purpose, the MLK Dream Run brings it all. Your legs will do the running, but your spirit will leave richer—and that’s exactly what this event is all about.
