If there’s a newer running shoe brand generating buzz, Mount to Coast is probably leading the charge. Known for their sleek road models and uniquely dialed-in Tunedfit lacing system, they’ve managed to strike a balance between innovation and simplicity. With the launch of their first trail shoe—the T1—they’re officially venturing off-road, and bringing their signature style along for the ride.
Let’s dive in.

Looks
In true Mount to Coast fashion, the T1 leans minimalist in the looks department. At launch, there are only two color options: a clean white/black and an earthy brown/beige. Both choices align with the brand’s trend of subdued palettes and a function-first aesthetic.
While Mount to Coast has recently started experimenting more with color in some other shoes, the T1 keeps things modest and classic—an understated vibe that works well in the rugged outdoors.
Construction and Fit
One of the biggest things fans will be excited about is the continued evolution of the Tunedfit system—the unique lacing method that’s become synonymous with Mount to Coast. In the T1, they’ve gone all-in: instead of mixing Tunedfit with traditional laces (like the S1), this one features only the Tunedfit system, with one adjustable tie across the top and another across the tongue.
It makes for a truly personalized fit and allows for quick adjustments during long runs—especially when your feet start to swell. That said, there’s a learning curve. Personally, I found it a bit tricky to dial in the same consistent lockdown I prefer on variable terrain.
On steeper or more technical sections, the lacing would occasionally loosen ever so slightly. Combined with a heel collar that’s not overly plush, I ended up with a blister on my left heel—something I haven’t experienced in other Mount to Coast shoes like the S1, which I found more forgiving thanks to its traditional lacing setup.

Upper
The upper is as breathable as they come. You can literally see daylight through the woven fabric, and it’s reinforced with aramid fibers—a material that’s five times stronger than steel. For a high-mileage trail shoe, that combo of airflow and durability is clutch.
While the lightweight design is great for longer days, the shape might skew toward runners with a more standard or narrow foot. I fall into that group, so it worked for me, but those with wider feet might feel constrained.
The lockdown, as I mentioned above, had some challenges with me and me feet. I was able to dial it in a bit better over time and experimentation, but I think I still prefer a typical lacing system in my uppers.
Midsole
Mount to Coast didn’t mess with a good thing here—they essentially pulled the LightCELL midsole from the R1 and dropped it into the T1. It’s a nitrogen-infused PEBA blend that delivers excellent energy return without going full marshmallow. The feel is lively and stable, and while it’s not over-the-top cushioned, it strikes a nice balance between trail feedback and long-run comfort.
In terms of durability, this foam holds up. I can see this shoe being a go-to for back-to-back long days or a big mileage build without turning to mush.
Outsole
If you’re familiar with Vibram’s Megagrip compound, you know it performs. Mount to Coast pairs it with Litebase construction, which supposedly drops 30% of the outsole weight, and their Traction Lug design, said to offer 25% more grip.
While I can’t verify those numbers, what I can say is this: the traction is stellar. From loose gravel to packed dirt to some wetter terrain, the grip was consistently dependable. Combine that with the relatively low weight and full outsole coverage, and this shoe brings a great mix of performance and versatility without bogging you down.
Final Impressions
Mount to Coast keeps proving they’re not a flash-in-the-pan brand. The T1 is a serious first trail entry—lightweight, energetic, breathable, and equipped with tech that most brands take years to perfect. If you’re already a fan of their road lineup, the T1 is worth your attention. And if you’re looking for a trail shoe with modern flair and legit performance, this could be your next go-to—especially if the full Tunedfit system clicks for you.
