Shore Thing: Running on Sand at the Ocean’s Edge 5K

One of my favorite all-beach running events is the Ocean’s Edge 5k. I actually participated in this 13 (!) years ago and it was as casual and fun as it was challenging. Sand man!
The 2025 event is scheduled for Saturday, July 12th and is an out-and-back held entirely on the beach in Lincoln City (at the D-River Wayside- the main beach parking area in LC). In running this before, I can simply describe the course as follows:
  1. Head north on the beach
  2. Turn around at halfway cones
  3. Don’t get swept out to sea

Pretty simple, eh? Maybe you will even get lucky with the sun providing some actual beach-like conditions, but it should be a nice mild temperature no matter what. It’s the Oregon Coast – you just never know.

Just for clarification’s sake, expect a flat run, but not so much a fast one. I have learned just how much different it is to run in sand, especially in the dryer sandy areas. The parking will be plentiful at the Wayside and there are restrooms there as well. Dogs are welcome to run with their owners as well. This is self-timed, so expect a casual event.

Proceeds from the Ocean’s Edge 5k will benefit the Lincoln City Parks and Recreation department.
