Over the past two decades, the perspective on Salem has transformed dramatically for many of us. Like many, I once underestimated its appeal, often drawn instead to the flashier reputations of Portland or Eugene. But Salem, once easy to overlook, has quietly matured into a vibrant and inviting destination.
Today, the city offers more than just charm—it features scenic running routes like Minto Brown Park and lies in close proximity to some of Oregon’s premier wine AVAs and wineries, including the renowned Willamette Valley Vineyards. This summer presents the perfect chance to experience that blend of nature and culture at the Run Willamette Salem Hills 5K, hosted by WVV.
The Basics:
The 5K will be set against the backdrop of Salem’s rolling hills and lush vineyards. Runners will wind through the Estate property, including the historic lower Bernau Block—Willamette Valley Vineyards’ original planting. The route continues through Into the Woods, the vineyard’s camping and outdoor facility, before culminating in a challenging and rewarding climb up the iconic drive that leads to the main estate.
Expect a mix of terrain—paved roads, gravel, and dirt paths—paired with steep ascents and descents that make for a demanding yet rewarding course.
