Hayward Hustle: Drawing Inspiration from the Eugene Marathon

Run in the Footsteps of Legends.

If you want a truly inspirational marathon, you’ve got to do the Eugene Marathon at least once. There’s a reason why Eugene is called Tracktown USA, and there’s nothing quite like finishing on Hayward Field in the historic running mecca of Eugene. This is especially true when you need to dig deep for those last strides to the finish line.

The Eugene Marathon is the Pacific Northwest’s largest marathon and it’s always in the spring on the last Sunday of April. The course is largely flat, and runners will meander through Eugene and Springfield and along the Willamette River. You’ll have the opportunity to run in many of the same spots that world class runners like Steve Prefontaine have pounded the pavement (or track) for many years.

The Full Marathon is a personal fave of mine, and one I recommend to new runners every year. It’s super well organized, beautiful, and pretty much as good as it gets. It starts on Sunday, April 27th at 7:00AM and there’s a 7 hour course time limit. There’s only 494 feet of total elevation gain.

The Half Marathon is the most popular option for runners every year and it’s easy to see why. It begins with the Full Marathon that Sunday at 7:00AM and the spirit at the start is infectious! There’s a 3.5 hour time limit for this distance and a total elevation gain of 395 feet.

The 5k is on Saturday April 26th and it’s already sold out. This race begins at 8:00AM with a 1 hour course limit. Race goodies for this distance include a Nike running shirt, a finishers medal, a reusable water bottle, a pancake breakfast, and some additional food items. Get it on your radar for next year!

For the kiddos, there’s a Kids Duck Dash at 9:30AM, also on Saturday April 26th. This race is about 1 kilometer long and is for kids between the ages of 2 and 12 years old. Kids 6 and under need a chaperone to run with them and only 1 adult per child is allowed on the course. They will also get a Nike running shirt, medal, water bottle, and the pancake breakfast.
