Run Oregon Test Kitchen: Lifeway Kefir

We’re back with another installment of the Run Oregon Test Kitchen, where we explore food and drink options that runners might find useful—whether for performance, recovery, or just keeping the body happy and healthy.

This time, we’re talking about something that’s likely already in your local grocery store but might not have made it into your cart yet—Lifeway Kefir. You’ll find it in the dairy/yogurt section, and while it looks like a smoothie, it’s actually a cultured, probiotic-rich drink that I’ve been drinking for a few years now.

I first stumbled across it when looking for something to drink on its own or blend into smoothies, and it’s been a staple in my fridge ever since.

At its core, kefir is a tart and tangy cultured milk drink that’s high in protein, calcium, and vitamin D—all things runners can benefit from. It also contains 12 live and active probiotic cultures, making it a solid option for gut health. And really, what runner couldn’t use a little extra protein and vitamin D?

The taste might catch you off guard at first—it’s tangier than you might expect. Plus, Lifeway Kefir has a variety of flavors, so you can find one that works for you.

  • Looking for a refreshing standalone sip? Try the mango.
  • More of a chocolate fan? Yep, there’s a kefir for that.
  • Want to mix it into a smoothie? The vanilla and coconut flavors are fun options.

No matter what you choose, it’s an easy way to add something unique and flavorful to your routine. You can check their store locator, but I’ve had no trouble finding it at my local Safeway. If you’re curious, grab a bottle and give it a shot—you might find it’s a nice addition to your rotation.
